In the past (before the 90's or so) most people that were coming to the States wanted to become citizens. They were leaving their country to come to the land of opportunity and create roots here. Their lives and fortunes were cast with the US and they wanted to be citizens so that they could vote and participate beyond the economics. Don't get me wrong, they wanted to earn a lot of money and live the American dream as well...but they were here to stay.
Immigrants that are coming to the US to stay and lay down roots, I have no problem with. I don't believe that is what we are seeing today. I work in IT and many of my friends have green cards, but I know of very few that want to be citizens of the US. They want the money, but not anything else. FWIW.

Yes, green card, but that is the path to citizenship. And the Irony is that the people that are coming here illegally are the ones more likely to put down "roots" than the people that the govt is giving the green cards to
