"Nice car" is a very frequent comment.
"Thank you" seems appropriate at first but on further reflection, he's not complimenting me. He's complimenting the car. You might say that he's complimenting my taste but probably not.
Sometimes I see this comment as an opportunity to educate the complimentor. He's commenting on appearance, whereas we all know that the Lotus appeal is performance.
I had that conversation just this afternoon with a security guard.
