You can potentially gain good power by using an EFI, but as you noted, it comes at a high cost.
I say if you intend to add other mods such as exhaust/intake/lower pulley size, then going EFI ain't so bad all things considered.
If you just don't care about max power then keep the $$
The system will at least have some resale value. You can resell it if you don't like it and recoup most of the initial costs. I guess that's a plus.
