as far as the question on the V1, its still considered a very good detector and it has had a very long run as the *best* detector. it is only recently that a few newer detectors have started to beat the V1 in certain areas. The one big one where V1 is getting hurt is in its signal detection algorithms. The V1 still relies on being very sensitive (giving it very long range) but it also has a difficult time determining what is an actual signal from a gun and what is background noise. In particular the laser performance is poor for a number of reasons: first the V1 treats *any* IR modulated signal near 903 nm as a confirmed alert which results in alot of falsing. secondly, the V1 does not have any provision for active jamming (e.g. just having an output to activate an external jammer would be nice.... This falls in the general problem with the V1 in that there is no remote mount option aside from taking the detector and putting it in a weather proof case, which is a big PITA.
Right now the big contender is the passport 9500, particularly the remote mount version which while it is expensive has just about everything. The K40 calibre is also a very nice system but is not without its issues: in particular, the calibre is less sensitive then other detectors but has superior alert filtering (e.g. it does a much better job of filtering out alot of the false alert signals, particularly with LIDAR. same goes for laser park pro. Another issue with the calibre is that you only get two leds for warnings as opposed to the myriad of info the V1 gives.
I have talked with V1 a few times about building a remote version but they are simply not interested. They have a nice little market going selling portables and do not want to pursue anything else...
