i would suggest as soon as you can. i waited a bit. by waiting all i did was loose time on things.
the research is nice in that ..every scientist is working on the same thing. so if you have one research place at level ten with 63 guys studying, and to go to level 11 is 1000 glass, and 1700 wood... or you start your new colony with research and for the same amount of scientist its only 60 wood... either one has same overall effect on research, it just way cheaper...
