...hatchbacks in general work rather nicely in this regard; both my '81 mercury capri and '90 geo prizm were comfortably capacious with the rear seat folded down, although the capri's windows did tend to fog up quickly...

...conversely, new beetles are terrible in the same regard - the hatch is far too stubby, while the front seats take several minutes crank backward...
