You need to remove it ALL in order for it to look good, in my opinion!
That is what I did. At first I had left the heat shield over the elbow
pipe and it looked like crap. So I got some header wrap, removed
the rest of the heat shield, and wraped that pipe (bc it is so close
to the clam). I have had no issues thus far with the entire heat
shield removed and have read an endless amount of threads here
with the same results. Removing the heat shield from the elbow
pipe was very time consuming for me using tin snipes and cutting
off a little at a time. Maybe some one else can chime in with an
easier way.

Anyways here is my final results.
