Being in NC you may have to do something "creative" to save a bunch of money. The Hendrick family (NASCAR, and own a lot of car dealerships) are very politically powerful. They and other dealership owners got a state law passed that essentially tries to tax to death out of state car purchases. Check with the NC DMV before buying a car out of state. I know I bought a car from Michigan while living there, not realizing this "tax" law. The state wanted 15% tax to bring it into NC. I had family in Mich (in-laws) so I registered it in my father in-law's name and got Mich plates on it. There was another way. Find a friendly dealer and have them "purchase" the car for you and do the paperwork through them.
