Probably, but.......TOO LATE!
Actually, I regret nothing, it worked fine and pulling the whole linkage assembly to get two turns out of the cable without absolute assurance that it would work was a bit daunting in 102°F weather. There was plenty of excess thread on the shifter end to work with.
It works beautifully now.
