Maybe it was because it was 100 degrees inside my garage when I tried it this weekend and I was getting heat exhaustion!

You're right, there are no clips on the right side, but there are two "hinges", i.e. interlocking plastic pieces that allow to two halves to pivot from the right side. If both hinges are correctly positioned (and the filter is seated correctly), the box closes fairly easily. Otherwise, it seems like an impossibility...
