OK, I went to the drag strip last Wednesday prepared to put down some good times and my car dies on the first launch. Suddenly no fuel pressure! The plug in my fuel return line vibrated out. Talk about a dissapointment!!!! I finally made it, drove 70 miles to the strip and I don't even make it one pass. AAAAAAARRRR....... Well now I have to continue to speculate but I now have something to compare it to at least that makes these numbers more realistic.
Only a few days before going to the strip I had a race. I found out that I had missed a local car show and when I was cruising around afterwards, I heard this 82 Monte Carlo that was just NASTY! (I just found out all the details on the car this past weekend at another car show which I will tell you later in the email) Anyway, it is basically a drag car, running on race gas, loud as heck and barely able to idle at all (This car was without a doubt a beast and one of the meanest cars I have seen around on the street)
I knew I had to race him so I ended up getting behind him as we exited town. He jumped on it in front of me, so I immediately jumped on it as well. We pulled about even that time. I then pulled up next to him at about 50 and he got the jump on me due to my RPM at the time and his was an automatic but then, again, we pulled about even. One more time, we were now going about 75 and he pulled me about a half a car length but then as I my turbo really kicked in, I started to pull him just a little around the top of 3rd gear.
OK.....What does all this mean: Well the car is a 489 cubic inch (I think that was correct, it was 480 something) big block car. He runs 13:1 compression ratio, aluminum heads, has a giant roller cam, and runs a dominator carb that is still not big enough. The car is stripped out and the last time he ran the car it ran a 10:50 et @ 130mph. He tells me that it is a little faster now and that the car pulls exceptionally well in the upper RPM's and his trap speeds are closer to that of a 9:90 et car.
Basically, the car could not pull me and yes, he would have me out of the hole as he was running slicks and a 4 link suspension (he pulls wheel stands with it) but if I could stay in my RPM range, I pull just as hard as he does, if not a little harder. (I also had my wife in the car with me at the time and he was by himself). I will still not know until I actually run the car, but I think if I can get it to hook up, I do think low 11's at upper 120's or so may be in order. Hopefully I can make it back to the strip again. I am so upset that they closed our local one.
Also, after this past car show there was a cobra replica with a 427 that was driving around and showing off. Again, I got behind him. He kept chirping his tires and showing off and then floored it in front of me. I pulled right with him (just for a second in first gear). I wanted to race him in a big way but I think I scared him off as he turned off to loose me only to drive by later and wave. I don't think he wanted me to show him up in his big block Cobra. I did have my info posted on my car so he probably realized that I might make him look stupid or at least burst his bubble a little. I guess he was afraid of my 110 cubic inch monster
