You can't tell a thing about the filter's ability to do its job (filtering) by looking at the internal structure of a filter. There are several web sites that take apart oil filters and judge its usefulness as a filter dependent on what it looks like. Totally meaning less, but it is being taken as Gospel by a whole generation of "car guys"...

Unfortunately, no one is actually doing tests on the filter's ability to filter, flow rate, expected filtering ability as the mileage piles up, etc...
