That's how a short shifter is installed on the VX220/Speedster. They do not modify the shifter, but change the control arm ratio's on the gearbox itself.
I don't see why that can't be done with the Toyota box. Just need someone with the resources to make a new bell crank with different geometry. I'm wondering if you can drill another hole were the shift cable attaches.
