Sales taxes are based on where exactly you live. If you live in a city boundary it might be higher than other areas. There are websites that show this, but depending on what zip your in, it can be different.

You pay sales taxes at the time of purchase, and registration at the registration places around the city.

It's not cheap, but there are more expensive taxes and registration.

I think I paid about $800 to get tags, and sales tax for me was 2.5% (others are higher up to 6 for places like boulder I think).

As your car deprieciates, your registration fees go down a lot.
