I would not fear about him thinking that this is a fragile car and your insurance rates. They dropped your car on its arse form 7 feet up for pete's sake. I would not settle for anything other than a replacement. If they want it fixed the dealer can have it fixed and sell it for all I care.
With you having family ties to that place I'd encourage you to keep calm, even and firm. I wont do anything with the dealer ship until I see their offer/response to this. In chatting with them just say "let's see what Dimmitt says." This way you are not the 'prick with the lotus' off the bat to them. Honey and vinegar thing. Good luck.
