It is a sandwich plate (non edible topping) to allow access to the oil system. I have one on the S2000, but mine allows elimination of the engine mounted oil filter and allows plumbing to an external filter, in my case a Canton-Mecca.

I am curious as to the placement of the antibackup valve, the brass fitting in the picture. With the engine mounted filter having an internal antidrain valve, such a fitting usually is not required. I'd have to see how the Elise's Accusump in plumbed to figure out that one.
