The shots shown weren't *real* HDR. I used to do it the proper way with a program called HDRmagic, but it was a lengthy and rarely successful technique. From what I learned, all I can say is use a tripod and definitely use a bracket function on your camera to avoid any deviance in your pictures.
What I did was play with levels in Adobe Lightroom (free beta program), especially fill light and black sections, which essentially what HDR is. Tweaking here and there and you should be good. It doesn't work with every picture, and it's easy to get carried away. I like to tune down the saturation because the rest of the photo is usually really dramatic as it is.
