Engine Electrical Wiring Problem

Sorry for the lengthy post, but any help would be appreciated.

My '06 ran great from Sept. 2007 until Feb. 2009, when I gradually started getting various misfire codes and rough idle problems. For the longest time, I thought it was something mechanical, such as the cams, but they look fine. Car only has 13,000 miles on it. I replaced the coils and that helped, but it still throws 1301, 1302 and/or specific cylinder misfire codes if I let it idle for more than 10 minutes after reaching operating temp. Basically, it sounds like it runs on 3 cylinders and then cuts off.

This happened last Sunday. Last night I plugged in the OBD II reader to retrieve the code (1302, BTW), but just turned the ignition switch without starting the car. This is the first time I had done this, as I had always plugged in my reader while the engine was running. It was a quiet night in my closed garage. When I went back to the engine bay, I could hear a distinct electrical crackling and humming sound coming from the front of the engine bay. After several hours of fiddling (removing ECU, inspecting connection, etc), I discovered that if I pulled the ignition coil/injector fuse and then switched on the ignition, the crackling and humming was not heard. I therefore believe that I have some fault in the wiring for the coils/injectors. There is nothing wrong with the part of the wiring that I can see, and the sound seems to be coming from underneath throttle body or intake. I suspect there has been some sort of heat or chafing damage similar to what was described in this recent post:

http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f101/heads-up-owners-30k-80605/

My questions are these:

1. Anyone had any electrical wiring problems affecting the coils/injectors?
2. The engine wiring harness winds like a vine around the engine. Any pointers on where a problem might likely be?
3. Anybody have a diagram of how the engine harness is routed throughout the engine bay? I don't have the Lotus Shop Manual :( and the Celica manual doesn't address this.

Many thanks.

So I went to Symbolic motor car company and talked to Lee, the service advisor.

I asked him how much it would cost to own this vehicle in terms of maintenance.

He told me there are two services a year at least. One (oil change @ $150-200) at 7500 miles or 6 months. which ever comes first. Then the once a year maintenance which includes the oil change and brake fluid change, i believe something else as well for around $350. So in total least amount spent is around $500-600 if nothing goes wrong.

He also told me that tires lasted about 6-9k miles on the rear and the fronts would last about 12-18k miles (twice as long). But this is on a touring trim where I could get any set of tires really.

Another item would be brakes. These are the expensive things he warns me. About 350 for pads + rotors came out to around 1300 dollars plus that would have to be done about every 15k miles.

As far as all that, everything else is on me. Well, the 30k service like any vehicle really would run about $900 too. But as far as damage to a body panel or to under parts of a car, could be anywhere from 1200-12,000!

Also he mentioned something about a "Campaign" with the air conditioning. He explained how the air conditioning was really an after thought when they built the lotus so running the AC would cause condensation that would build up in the car (I am guessing the front) that would cause massive amounts of damage. He tells me that lotus has fixed some of these under warranty but some are not covered (Dont know why). He did say that he offers some type of service where they drill four holes to allow this part to drain.

Last but not least he warns me that it is not a very practical vehicle and that I may hear rattles here and there that will come in and out and how I have to be very careful washing the vehicle, which I am not sure as too why.

Any feedback or experience which what he has told me, or any rebuttals would be awesome! I am trying to learn as much as I can about this vehicle before I purchase it.

*I know this is about maintenance but I thought I might get more responses in this section*

I was thinking of having the dealer inspect it but they may just say I need a ton of work done.

How to make sure brake bleeding went well?

Did it for the first time tonight (also replaced pads and transaxle fluid, but that's easy).

So now I'm a tad scared to drive. Seen some (a lot) bubbles come out of the rear calipers and now I'm paranoid. Drove around the subdivision, did some 40-0 stops with ABS - all good. Pedal did not fall to the floor, ABS worked. ABS made a manatee-type groan after the car already stopped (after the chatter ended) - not sure if it was like that before.

Pedal feel overall seems the same, or I forgot what it feels like in 2 weeks that I didn't drive the car. The subtle subjective differences between "very firm" and "slightly mushy" elude me.

Any way to objectively judge the quality of the brake bleeding job?

I drove my 08 Elise about two weeks ago when the weather was decent (which is rare in Seattle) and it was running just fine. I tried to take it to work last Thursday and it wouldn't start. I thought it was a weak battery issue; so, I plugged in the battery management device to charge the battery. I tried to start it today and it woulnd't start, either.

The lights were working just fine. The headlight came on and I was able to open/close the window without problem. However, when I pushed the "start" button, all it did was making the clunk-clunk sound, and that was it. I went and got a mini-jump device from Schuck's and tried to jump start the car; that didn't work. I tried to push start the car, and it didn't work, either.

Any idea what could be wrong with the car? I assume the batter is good because all other electrical items function just fine. :wallbang:

Hi,

I was driving back from lunch and I noticed that the engine light came on just before I got back to work. There's no funky smell or anything and the car runs fine but before I take it to the dealership I'd like to know what is going on. Is there any place I can get one of those gizmos that tell me what the error code is for the fault? I have the service manual in which codes are described but unfortunately I can't get the code just by starring at the engine light :)

Any online resource one would suggest?

TIA

Edit: The car is a 2005 Elise.

Which Motive Bleeder

So I've gone through about 20 threads of people raving about Motive brake bleeders, and I've realized that there is about a dozen of different Motive "kits" for different brake fluid reservoir cap sizes. I also found that outer diameter of the cap is 51mm (cool thread about replacement ATE cap).

Question is - what exact Motive "kit" should I get?

I have managed the oil change myself last couple of times pretty well.
My 06's Elise now hits 15K miles.
If it goes to the dealer how much do you think it will cause me?
