I just got back from an amazing trip to Las Vegas on the weekend which included a day's worth of driving a rental Lotus Exige (from Dream Car Rentals located on the strip).

The folks at the rental couldn't tell me much at all about the car, so I didn't even bother asking them about what obvious (and not-so-obvious) modifications had been done to the vehicle.

From what I could tell, the car was an '06, with all of requisite the carbon bits, and some unnecessary stickers:











Steering wheel was replaced with a quick release Momo:



The cluster had a red shift light, an airbag light (removed steering wheel?), and a constant a check engine light:



Engine bay had no charger/intercooler, and an aftermarket intake:





and this curious blue pressurized tank in the boot:



There was an aftermarket "on/off" switch installed in the center console in front of the 12V plug. As far as I could tell, the car was equally fast (slow?) with the switch on or off.

The exhaust note was on the louder side of loud, with plenty of rasp, off-throttle burble, and extremely noticeable >6000 rpm cam profile changeover:

I've been a long time lurker, but never wanted to post until I was an owner.

Im very seriously considering trading my 996 C4S for a 2007 Exige S. When I first test drove the car, I figured I'd NEVER buy one - too tough to get in, and too loud and unrefined. You even hear every pebble that sprays up on the undertray (!). I left the dealership, jumped in the 4S and it felt like a Lexus. (Even my old S2000 seems much more "civilized"). Here's a pic - since all threads should contain one)



The problem is that I keep thinking about the Exige. ;) I plan on tracking the 4S much more this year, and I just think the Exige will be a better and less expensive track option. Plus, Im not sure I've ever had a more exciting driving experience!! :evil:

I was hoping the forum could help me answer a few questions...

Sound level and the cell phone: The Exige will have to me my daily driver for a couple of years... ( I already read the sticky post ) - but the real concern for me is sound level and cell phone use. I will be traveling between offices, and Im sure will be having to use the phone a fair bit during the commute. Is there additional sound deadening available - perhaps just for the firewall that would cut some of the resonance in the cabin?

Shifter: the shifter in the car I drove was pretty vague, and it vibrated around a ton when just cruising. What do you guys rec for upgrading this item? I have a B&M in the P-car which was a tremendous improvement.

Reliability: I found (perhaps) a great deal on a 2007 with 200 miles. I do not believe there is any warranty left. I do have an ext warranty on my 911, and the finance minister (wife) is not excited about having a sports car with no warranty... all comments appreciated..

What would you recommend? Does the 260 model have newer changes than the 240, other than little less weight and more engine power? Is the 260 better coped to deal wi/ supercharger boosts, etc, upgraded clutch plates? Or are both almost the same cars ?

PS, i am pretty experienced with high horsepower vehicles as well as driving on the track; i am looking to customize an exige and am wondering which is the better base setup.

The owner's manual has zip as far as information. Although I the mechanics of adjustment are straightforward, in use it seems to be either on full or, backing off a bit, not really all that evident.

Am I missing something? Where do those of you who have it set it for fast street driving? All on, fully off, or where?

Not so say I.

Yesterday, drove down in my Exige 260 from SE Wi where I live for my annual physical in the northern suburbs of Chicago. Then I drove to Fox Valley Motorsports west of Chicago for TJ to perform some quick and necessary surgery on the new Exige (remove the worthless rear view mirror so I can mount my Garmin GPS and my Valentine 1 without taking up too much of the limited forward view, and add two power outlets on the sides of the HVAC control pod to power them. Then add a battery tender pigtail that exits near the rear license plate so I don't have to leave the rear hatch open when the small battery is on a tender. Then home on the interstate.

So all in all about four hours in a seat that I found very near perfect. (And I have a crap back, courtesy of Uncle Sugar when I was wearing a green suit in 1969.) Stiff ride? Sure, but very precise as well. Uncomfortable? Nope. Fun? You bet your butt!!!

Okay, is it as comfortable as my wife's Lexus? Are you kidding? Is it as practical as my normal driver, a Ford Escape? Hell no. (I normally commute by train and drive the Escape on weekends to pick up stuff or tow a trailer with a track motorcycle.) But, is it any more impractical than my former Ferrari 355 weekend toy? Nope.

Is a Porsche 911 more comfortable? Hell yes. Is it faster? Depends on where. On the street, I'd say the Exige 260 is more 'usuable' as it lets you play on the back roads around where I live for a lot less coin and gives you more 'fun feedback' than a 911 (and I have owned many of them too.) As a 'cut and thrust' weapon on the street, it is nigh on unbeatable.

The Exige 260 is a great weekend street toy. It is fun cutting in and out of traffic as well as wailing around the back roads. The road tests do not know what they are talking about. And the fellow in the M3 who tried to stay with me in and out on the interstate is talking to himself after I disappeared on him and a 911 about 3pm yesterday.

Perfect driver on the street? Hell no. The utter lack of rear vision and the dependence on your side mirrors requires a lot of car in passing and maneuvers in general. That leaves you adopting the motto of Raul Julia in GUMBALL RALLY when he leapt into the Daytona Spyder and ripped off the rear view mirror: "Firsta rule of Italian driving, what is behind me is of no importance!"
