Elise Track Time List

All,

This thread is meant for educational purposes. I hope this will help the fellow Elise/Exige gauge their times against similar cars running the same track.

Note: I will only add times to the list if they contain the following information:

1. Track
2. Date
3. Car
4. Name
5. Tires
6. Car Modifications
7. Air Temp. (if available)

Let's try to keep this as an accurate list of times.

P.S. Although this is mainly for Elise and Exige times, other cars ar fine as well.

in addition, insurance for street-legal cars that allows for track usage will most likely exclude coverage if you are keeping times.

the best evidence of improved performance is whether, on average, you are having to give less point-by's and/or waiting for the next passing opportunity to get by someone. stopwatches are for advanced driver's who have mastered all the simple stuff and are tinkering with set-ups (which can't be captured in a simple list or database) and or specific techniques. i am certainly not there and i suspect that 80 to 90% of the people that participate in track days aren't either.

so let's call this what it is.... a bragging rights thread.

and i'll delete this post after it has had a chance to be seen.
That two cents was worth a lot more than two cents.

Rich350, because of his autox experience, is probably experienced enough not to let lap time angst create red mist. But in general, newcomers shouldn't even think about laptimes.

i was just about to ask for lap times for portland international raceway, so I think this is a good thread!!!

And for reference with a 1966 ginetta g-12 on avon's with treads, I ran a 1.26.83 there. Curious to see what elises/exiges do.

I have to agree with ace10 as keeping times is for advanced drivers, not those new to track days. I've instructed for many years in the NW and support ace10's comments on what novice drivers should be learning and how to best judge their progress. Personally, I have never timed a personal lap while at a track day, that is what racing is for! Have had others time me from the stands and I am always surprised when they tell me what I was running. My focus is being smooth and consistent to set a good example for my students.

My $.02 worth!

Steve

I disagree about the comments regarding lap times at DE's. I DO agree that beginners should not keep them, but it's definitely the best measurement to use for experienced drivers.

Also, many active racers use DE's as a means of getting setup for a race. It's relatively cheap track time to use for practicing.

He is actually spot on....you are the newbie and the one that needs to get real. Timing is a huge no no and can cause problems if there is an incident. Some organizers are more sensitive to it than others.

There is no problem with keeping datalogs of timing while adhering to all the track rules for conduct, etc. I agree some organizers will not allow it, for some good reasons. Some people have a problem conducting themselves correctly and following the rules. I do understand that it is not a race, but there is nothing wrong with benchmarking your lap against yourself, and later compare your times with others.

To go out on an HDPE and disreguard the rules and act like you are at an open race, is not acceptable and is not what we are talking about here.

Some here need to get off their throne and look at what the purpose of this is.

I respectfully disagree with both posts. But since the other one was deleted, I'll reply here.

Information is never a bad thing. I respect the idea of warning someone to use the info properly. I just don't like dismissing the info as a bad thing. Without it, I probably would have convinced myself that I was doing well at 2:20 and never would have taken it up a notch. On the other hand, if random Joe Schmoe goes out there and busts out a time I can't beat, I'm hardly going to try to equal him. Instead, I'll be cognizant that I'm really slow and just keep working on my craft until it feels right to go faster.

I would like to think that everyone here is mature enough to drive according to his/her own limits and the inherent fear factor would be enough to inspire low speeds. Especially since the car feels really hard to handle at the hands of a newb.

I also believe that one of the key aspects of a trackday is to send home the first time yahoo muttering things like, "Wow. That felt super fast to me but Jon is 15 seconds faster. Apparently, the driver is more significant than the car. I have work to do."

XP and others... FYI... the text for the lead-in post of this thread has been modified significantly by the OP. it orginally read that this thread was specfically intended for first timers and people just getting into driving on a track. as the OP has states in his "edit" note... the purpose of this thread has now been clarified.
my primary beef, if you read my embedded quoted, WAS that a first timer or anyone new has no business worrying about lap times. leave that to those folks who have reached the point where they are refining techniques and setups.
again, newbs should not be running lap timers, they should not be looking at their speedos, they should be listening to their instructors and concentrating on developing track awareness.
and i deleted my first post because i said i would when i first posted it. i didn't feel that it was necessary to belabor a point. i would hope that others can do the same.

richw350 - thank you for changing the title of this thread, much better now.

ace10 - well said, hopefully we are all done now!

all - Yes, I log times in a race car for all the reasons listed. At a track day, an easy way to know if you are improving is when you start catching cars that where faster then you. I know I am turning quick laps in my Elise when I catch a well driven, modified S that I run with.

Ginetta - I have run 1:28's in my box stock Elise at PIR. Best Lotus time I have heard of is said Exige S at 1:27.

You're promoting the exact sort of thing you claim to be against. How is using another driver as a carrot safer than using a laptime? Oh, you didn't actually claim to use them as the carrot. That's right. You are able to just be aware of how you fare against them. Excellent point. [pause contemplatively] Hey, how come you can't use a lap time in the same way you use other cars?

From another post, you claim your key objective is smoothness and consistency. Me too. I can show you pix I took with my phone of a longacre lap timer that show this:
03 2:13.14
04 2:13.14

Have you ever been that consistent? Who would know?

And why do you care what your laptimes are when you're racing? You're talking about races, not TTs right? Finishing order is the only thing that matters in a race.

My personal $.02, as long as everybody is chipping in, is that there are a lot of valid ways to float your own boat. As long as you are being responsible and safe, there is no reason to conform to somebody else's preferences.
