WTF is up with the "bar code" motif on the Ferrari cars?

My wife says it is so they can be scanned in each time they complete a lap.

Does anyone know what the story is?

it's certainly not so they can be scanned in with a visible light scanner. F1 has RF telemetry.

It used to be a Malboro logo but as tobacco advertising is banned these days Ferrari used the bar code in its place. Don't know what it really reads if you were to scan it!
