are they good for cornering, or are they made to just go straight. any one use them on the track or auto x? or on the street?

technically all of the DOT hoosiers are road legal.

Hoosier makes slicks and DOT racing tires. Theoretically you can drive on the street with the R6 and A6 DOT tires, but it is not a good idea. The carcass is too fragile and easily damaged and that is expensive. Plus it sucks in the wet unless you run the Hoosier rain tires. But then they suck in the dry.

I think 245-17 rear and 225-16 front

Some people like 225s on the rear and 205s on the front to get more heat easily into them.

and what might one expect to get out of a set of r 6's in terms of mileage?

R6's are for the track. A6's are for autocross.

Not that it is not without some downsides, but racers have a long history of not following the tire company's specs on fit. You can squeeze wider tires on a skinnier rim.

But Touring... er... Non-Sport rims... that is pretty skinny.

As far as miles, I would get 20-30 miles from the tires before they corded.
