Introducing a new vintage racing podcast for drivers, race car owners and crew, enthusiasts and spectators of vintage racing, and vintage car collectors.

My co-host is Dave Vegher, past winner of 3 national championships and other awards, renowned U.S. race engine builder, and preparer of winning vintage racecars at his Veloce Motors West shop in Petaluma, California, one of the best shops in the States. Dave builds a lot of winning motors for various classes of race cars from Elan 26Rs to formula cars, to sports racers. I am not a racer, but am a double Elan owner (S3 and S4), and own other vintage cars, and am an enthusiast of vintage racing here on the West Coast. There will be a good deal of Lotus content, to be sure. The focus is likely to be on U.S. vintage racing, although I am sure Dave will share his experiences racing his Chevron in the Le Mans Classic, and maybe more.

We have a new web site, shown below, which will be the home base for our podcast, and where you can find our episodes, photos, helpful links, and blog posts. The link to our episodes takes you to our new media hosting service where you can listen to or download the episodes, and subscribe to the RSS feed to be automatically notified when new episodes are posted. Today I submitted our podcast to iTunes, and our podcast should be available in the iTunes store in 7-9 days.

We'll be covering the various racing groups - CSRG, SVRA, VARA, etc., and discussing the various racing categories - FV, FF, FA, F1, Sports Racing, etc. We'll also talk about vintage street cars; selecting, collecting, maintaining, and more. We also plan to interview many of the local vintage race drivers, mechanics, and luminaries. As you might imagine, with 40 years in the business, Dave will have plenty of stories for me to extract and share with listeners.

If any of you would like to share your ideas, provide questions for us to try to answer about vintage motors, race prep, race tracks, etc., please feel free to email me at:

and check out our web site:

Episode 4 Now on iTunes

Dave Vegher and I cover a lot of ground in this 4th episode. First off are some listener emails – thank you! Next, Dave talks about obtaining, restoring and developing his 24 Hour of LeMans Chevron B36 2-Liter sports racer. We move on to discussing the origin and race development of BMW M12 engines, talk about an Alfa GTA engine in the shop, and many other current engine projects for the 2016 racing season.

Too much to cover Dave’s drive in the Vintage 24 Hours of LeMans this time around, so we’ll bring that to you soon!

Go to our Episodes page to listen, or subscribe to Vintage Racing Podcast on iTunes. Don’t forget to subscribe to our news posts by going to our web site, then head to the menu at left, and select Entries RSS.

Vintage Racing Podcast has made it to the New and Noteworthy section of iTunes - a very pleasant surprise!

Episode 7 was just uploaded today - Part 2 of my conversation with Ethan Shippert.

Also recorded, a great discussion with Dave Vegher about how he approaches performance street builds vs. race builds, and how to plan a fresh engine build.

Dave has been working hard behind the scenes to hook me up with some of the Bay Area's top engine builders, race car preparers and builders, and vintage car restorers.

Please stop by soon.

Cheers,

Greg Tatarian

Please visit our web site, subscribe to our RSS feed, and subscribe to the podcasts on iTunes, or download from the Episodes page on our web site. Feel free to submit a couple of photos of your car for inclusion in our Listeners' page if you'd like.

Our new episode was published this morning. Dave Vegher and I met at his shop to discuss - using a Lotus Twin Cam as an example - how he approaches a performance street build vs. a race engine build, and how to plan your engine build, either doing it yourself, or having it built by a professional. Lots of great information here from a master engine builder, so please head to our web site, and download the new episode there, or from iTunes.

Cheers,

2-Part Conversation with Dan Marvin, Coming Soon

Back from the CSRG David Love Memorial Vintage Races, and I had a great time. Lots of work my first time around as a safety technical inspector, as there were over 250 cars entered, I was told. One of those entrants was my guest for an upcoming 2-part conversation - Dan Marvin, master machinist and mechanic with Jon Norman Racing in Berkeley, California, and championship-winning race driver.

Dan spoke by phone with me from the shop just a few days before the races. I'll tell you more about Dan when I post the first episode.

I'm busy editing and mixing the first part, so please stay tuned for an outstanding conversation with a special talent and great guy, Dan Marvin.

Cheers,

Greg

Please stop by our web site and check out the latest episode - Dave and Ethan talk about race tracks, and racing in rain.

If you're subscribed to our RSS feed and have already tried to listen to that episode, you may have noticed that it ended abruptly. After uploading the episode, work took me out of town, so I didn't notice that it was truncated by almost half its length! Clark A. Lance has just notified me of the problem, so I've re-uploaded the complete episode. Please give it a listen for more fun with Dave and Ethan, and thank you, Clark!
Cheers,
Greg

Parts 1 and 2 with Jerry Kehoe

Part 1 was released on June 29, 2016.

Released today is Part 2 of our conversation with vintage and club racer Jerry Kehoe. Greg and Jerry talk about Jerry's Triumph TR3, British vintage cars, the high cost of vintage and club racing, and disappearance of many things mechanical in our highly technical age. Jerry and Greg talk about welding, and muse about the dearth of good auto parts counter workers. Lots more in this episode, so please check it out.

Join Greg and Dave at Dave's shop for another fast-paced and topic-filled conversation as they talk about the upcoming at that time Elkhart Lake vintage races, the cars from the shop being raced that weekend, and the famous bratwurst! Dave and Greg also discuss the changing economics of vintage racing - the cars that are getting more expensive, and the ones that are still affordable for the racer without unlimited funds. Greg asks Dave about the June SVRA event held at Sonoma Raceway, where Ethan won the Formula Ford class, and they talk about the upcoming Monterey Motorsports Reunion event, and the interesting cars from the shop that will be racing there. Switching gears, Dave talks about how to prevent and cure engine oil leaks in Alfa Romeo engines, and they discuss potential rule changes in the Formula Atlantic category to allow later cars, and the effects that would have. Finally, Dave gives an introduction to a future guest - Willy Stryker, metalworker extraordinaire!

Video Slideshows, and New Episode Released

Greetings,

In this conversation, I chat by phone with Ethan Shippert, recently returned from the race meet at Elkhart Lake, where he drove previous guest Phil Reilly's Brabham BT44 Formula One car, and provided track support services for a client's Porsche. Ethan also recounts the recent SVRA Formula Ford and Club Ford celebration at Sonoma Raceway in June, where he raced a Crossle, and talks about some major maintenance and restoration on the car. Ethan also talks about tires, different FF cars, the talents of another wonderful previous Vintage Racing Podcast guest, Dan Marvin, and much, much more.

You can find this and all of our conversations through our Episodes page at Vintage Racing Podcast | With Greg Tatarian and Dave Vegher, or on iTunes. If you haven't already, check out the two video slideshows I recently released.

New Episode, September 1

Just released a new episode - please check it out.

This time around, I start off with some email and forum comments from our listeners. For our conversation, Dave and I met at the shop for a short run-down on the recent Monterey Historic Motorsports Reunion, for which Dave and Veloce Motors West had provided preparation and track services for 14 customer cars. As usual, we meander off on some interesting side roads, including a discussion about Hart racing motor design and evolution, and the rare and special Alfa Romeo GTAM motor with its unique monosleeve construction. It’s a brief conversation, because Dave was getting ready to head out of the shop, but a fun one.

Check out the new shop photos in the Photo Gallery, showing some of the current projects underway at Veloce Motors West.

Cheers,

Greg

This time around, I talk with Henk Boverhuis, lead technical inspector for the CSRG, and tech inspector for other vintage race organizations. Henk has a long history of working on race cars, going back to his days with the Griswold Company, his own shops in Berkeley, a long stint at Fantasy Junction, and years of working on clients’ race cars. Henk tells us about his own racing days, and some of his favorite race cars. Henk and I discuss the upcoming CSRG Charity Challenge race meet at Sonoma Raceway, September 30 through October 2, 2016, with a focus on the technical inspection process, the checklist for racers to fill out, how to save time and avoid delays, and key safety concerns to be addressed during the tech inspections.

Thanks for joining us!

We're back! We've had a work-induced delay in bringing you great conversations with interesting and entertaining participants in vintage racing and vintage car collecting. In this episode, Greg talks with CSRG President and vintage racer Locke de Bretteville. Locke tells us about his start in club racing back in the 1970s, working at Huffaker Engineering, lists some of his race cars and a LOT of old friends and colleagues in the racing field. Part 1 brings Locke's story up to the 1990s, and Part 2 will cover lots more, up to today, with a great story about how he found his current racecar, a 1969 Palliser-Winkelmann WDB2. Since Part 1 is coming out just 5 days before the final race of the 2016 season for CSRG, Locke tells listeners all about the upcoming race at Thunderhill.
