1200 miles needs new tranny

How many transmission problems are out there? My buddy had a noise coming from the shifter area. Turns out the tranny's bad. Brown fluid, metal chunks. The car was pampered durning the first 1200 miles/service. The noise was apparent from day one. The dealer has done at least one other tranny replacement that I know of.

I've also heard a story about a tranny going bad and needing replacement. "friend of a friend."

I will not say where or when but I personally witnessed a new car roll off the delivery truck with a bad tranny. It was an early car. The dealer caught the problem and corrected in in house with LCU's help. This was an east coast car.

FWIW, one guy reported that his car had a broken shift lever, 2nd gear synchro, AND a broken tranny mount! Hmmmm...

Ever drive an NSX? They shift pretty well for a mid engine car.

The shift lever is a problem waiting to happen. Anyone who has removed the center console knows this. Typical road driving will not cause a problem but spirited autoX on a contstant basis it may become an issue.

O...I wasn't talking about the fact that it's cable actuated which is causing the bad shifting. Yep, I have driven an NSX....absolutely wonderful shifting action...second to none...well, other than the S2000 Just stating that the quality control issues of cars arriving off the truck with bad trannies, synchros failing, etc might be the cause of the disappointing shifting action. I think the second Elise I've owned shifts better than the first, though trying to get into 1st while the car is rolling is a ball buster (even while double clutching, rev matching). I know that when I drive the M3, I'll downshift just for the fun of it. In the Elise, I'll do it, but just because the flywheel is so light that it's ridiculous..hehe, but it's certainly not for the shifting feel. I still dread downshifting to third. 6th to 5th...no prob. 5th to 4th...no prob. 4th to 3rd...eh...only if I have to.

I have one of the higher mileage Elises around and have done lots of auto-x. The shift lever is just fine in my case. Usually in autocross there is only one shift, from 1 to 2. Which is frequently short shifted, depending on the course. Never force anything when you are shifting.

As I recall, Surferjer brought to the lists attention this problem with the shift lever about 2 months ago.

see this thread

http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/show...ht=shift+lever

None of this however is addressing the initial issue of transmission failure on the vehicle with 1200 miles on it. Can the number please be provided so we can address this issue as possibly an early production problem?

Shipping related damage?

It was a predelivery issue. It rolled off the truck that way. Why or how or when, I cannot say.

I brought it up because presumably it drove fine at the factory before being shipped. Supposedly all cars get a few miles on them at Lotus and / or some low load chassis dyno time.

An Elise!? @ 1200 miles!? Damn, that's horrible. I'm sure my Civic came f*cked up. I had to rebuild the transmission at 40k miles. I've got 105k now - no problems since I changed it.

Hey, obviously someone screwed up a the factory if it went out at 1200 miles. I don't think it's an indicator at all of the average life of the transmission on the car.

Would the 'aftermarket' short-shift kit I saw on sector 111 (I think) be
structurally sounder?

It's funny that it's the Toyota part that broke and not the Lotus part...
