Dumb question? Is the transmission built by Toyota as well? That’s news to me. I knew the engine was so I guess it would follow that the transmission would be too. I just hadn’t made the connection.

Yes, it's the Toyota six speed.

How much would a new transmission for the Elise cost? Long Install?

dont know about the tranny but im 99% certain that the clutch on our yellow car slips under hard acceleration. It also smells bad when you "get on the gas" and its not typical clutch smell.

Ever drive an NSX? They shift pretty well for a mid engine car.
NSX shifts WORLDS better than the Elise. #3 on my list behind the S2000 and Miata. Stan, you must have driven a bad one???

OK, ive been wondering about that too... i could swear that the same thing is happening with mine as well; hard acceleration in 1st gear it feels exactly like the clutch is slipping and i have noticed weird (bad) smells as well on occasion. of course the standard test for slipping clutch (i.e. put it in high gear and let out the clutch while holding the break) does not indicate slippage. i wonder if the stock clutch just doesnt cut it....

Would the 'aftermarket' short-shift kit I saw on sector 111 (I think) be
structurally sounder?
Ridge, it absolutely would be more structurally sound than the stock Elise shifter. Mine broke, as noted earlier, and it is an issue. Some, like Stan, perhaps, are gentler on their shifters. Or maybe they don't let their teenaged sons drive. Or maybe it just hasn't happened YET. But there is a manufactured weakness. Right above the bracket there is a crimp, which is on the forward-facing side of shaft. Mine no longer looks like this at all LOL.

This doesn't address bad trannies. I'd guess a dock worker or two is responsible, because I just don't believe Lotus would load up a car without testing it a little.

Maybe I don't know much about transmissions, but how the heck could you damage a transmission during shipping? Do you guys think it is intentional? I just have a hard time believing a one or two time mistake, even a bad one, can ruin a transmission.

I don't think anyone damages a tranny on purpose, but just suppose the dock work can't find reverse, doesn't know to pull up on the release, and they're in a hurry and try to force it. Or...see another dock worker racing in the lot, and try to shift, but misses third and jams it back into first. oops.

One bad mistake can cause a whole lot of damage.

Ours too.

We've had tranny trouble too. Bought it from The Collection (Miami).
Within the first year (very low mileage) developed a leak.
Aparently it was a piece of metal let go from the clutch plate/pressure.
This must have made a hole in the bottom of the transmission.
After having it fixed we kept getting trouble with shifting the car in reverse.
It would fall into 2nd and remain stuck there!!
Very anoying. The way to get it unstuck was to remove the cover of the transmission (4 bolts) and use a screw driver to push a gear back in its place!
I developed a limiter in the shifter mechanism itself to limit the travel (when moving the lever to the left) and this has somewhat relieved it.
It's not bullet prove though.
The limiter is on the same bracket as the limiter that is released when lifting the thing on the shifter to allow for reverse.
Maybe I should take a picture of it.
We also heard of a recall about shifter linkages which were not round (the hexagonal ones, like ours).

This really sounds like it should have been covered by warranty - did you try and it was denied? And if so, on what grounds?

Thanks!

Replaced @ 4500

I had some third to second downshift issues, grrrrrind: Lotus
backed the claim, much better shifting now.
However there were bolts found to be loose (rear trans mount) less than 1000 miles after the service and the starter nearly fell out.
So my only .o2 would be to check the work to be 100% sure it was done right. Not too many places do a trans-swap on even a monthly basis.
It's your car and depending on how you drive it it could be more than just piece of mind to know everything is ship shape.
