How do you access that airbox? Do you have to take off the wheel? Much appreciated. |

Yes, wheel needs to come off. The stock airbox is between the wheel well liner and engine compartment. Should be in the owner's manual.

Well serches and serches....I have spent at least 1 hour looking at this site with no freaking luck.....people talk about the "trick" of getting the airfilter in....but no one explains what the hell they did first to get to the airbox....1. do you take the rear wheel off ..then wheel well...and then what? What do you really do....someone please just say it and explain it.,..

i did the install and it was a major pain. the air filter access is almost impossible even after the wheel and wheel liner is off. you need two people to close the filter box. i do notice a better throttle response. i would not recommend it though unless you are very mechanically inclined.

Seriously?
You jack up the driver's side of the car. You remove the rear driver's-side wheel. Remove the black cosmetic fastners in the wheel liner (4? 5?) Remove the wheel liner piece -- it's flexible. Note how it sat in the wheel well first. Reach into the engine bay and undo the two metal latches holding the airbox together. You can leave the snorkel alone. Remove the paper filter (sack of gravel), careful to spill as little as possible into the intake. Note which way it went in. Put your K&N in likewise. Either get a helping hand, or feel around the back from inside the wheel well -- you want to make sure the airbox lid "prongs" are seated into the hinge part. When it lines up and squeezes fully shut, pull the retaining clips back into place. Don't forget to put your wheel back on.

this thread, now with bonus google search results!
While looking for a K&N filter for my LSV (a Land Rover Disco II), I found a great site that has all types of K&N filters!
For those interested, This is about $10 cheaper than the previous best price I ever found on this item! This filter upgrade is highly recomended and a steal at this price. -=cixelsyd EDIT: I discovered, upon checkout, that one must spend at least $50 in order to get free shipping from this site. Bah. I guess that means I'd need to order some replacement H1 headlight bulbs too or something. Sorry. This is not nearly as cool a find with that $50 limit!!!

My bad!!! Thanks for pointing that out, Stan! Yeah - I meant to say Matrix filter. Stan started a great thread on this topic a year ago. People would do well to consult that for the part numbers as well as anecdotes about people's experiences changing the filter. -=cixel

I knew I had missed something. All done, filter in, car handles like crap! WTF! Put the wheel back on, put the wheel back on, put the wheel back on. I was wondering what those extra parts were. Thank God I'm a mechanic for a major airline.

And one tiny detail on actually loading the filter element into the housing.
The element has an indexing tab on one edge which must align with a slot in the housing. It can ONLY be installed in one, correct orientation which allows the cover of the housing to be closed completely. Don't ask how I know. Jim
