INSTALLING AN AUTO METER GAGE

Here's my dilemma. I want to install this Auto Meter Gage on my Elise, now I can follow the diagram and is a done deal but I want to do an install I did several years back. I installed a similar Tach on a Toyota Celica by finding the tack and instrument light wires at the rear of the cluster instead of running the entire wire the length of the car to the engine. Has any of you track monsters ever attempted this type of install before. I don't have the Elise service manual to consult, thanks in advance.

Auto Meter Sport Comp 3911

here's the instruction for the wiring.

best off going to the engine bay with an inductive pickup, first coilpack greenwire (on memory)

Just out of curiosity, why in Gods name would you install that in your Elise?

Lotus meant for the Elise to go fast on the curves, I going to make mine go fast in a strait line...

Apart from the obvious, what's the point of the tach?

Besides the obvious, there is no other point for that tach. The stock one is most likely not accurate. That autometer also has a light that tells you when you hit your set RPM (so you know when to shift without looking). That one might also have memory so you can see when you shifted during a run.

Why not just get a shift light then?

I thought about that but if I build an engine and the red line increases let's say to 8.5 or 9K, wouldn't the clock be beneficial???

Will the new tach compute a lower redline for a cold engine ?

I will set it for normal operating temperature red line, but this tach won't disable/affect the factory low temperature red light warning. BTW does anyone have a wire diagram for the cluster?

I'm going to pick up an inductive pickup adapter at 4PM Eastern time but i need to know this info. I was told the Elise is using a Toyota computer (most likely the Celica GTS) tweaked by Lotus, is this info correct? that's all I need to know. Thanks in advance.

Pickup a MSD Tach Signal Pick Up (Tach Signal GMR Pickup - 8918).

These are the same pickups we use on our Ecliptech shift lights so it's bound to work for your needs.

Excellent choice thanks, but where to I get the signal from on the Elise? this devise connects to the primary coil pack voltage wire? I don't want to make a mistake...

Remove the black Lotus cover on top of the engine and you'll see the 4 connectors. Attach the pickup to the green wire on the right-most coil pack (passenger-side on US cars).

Run the wire across the engine, down the back (near the firewall) and through the shift-cable hole in the firewall. Then, through the tunnel, up back and, if you are going to mount on the left, you might be able to just pull the panel that holds the Start button and finagle the wire up through to the dash.

Otherwise, you're pulling the dash.

Thanks man, I finally got a chance to finish the installing the tach. It works but it's reading incorrectly, at 1K RPM it reads 0 and pulsates between 0 and 500 RPM, at 3K it reads a little over 1K in the instructions from the GMR it says that some tachs have to be reprogramed, if so how do you do program the tach? another question is, in the instruction it states that for a 4 cylinder application you must clip the orange and brown wires, but i have brown and blue I've tried cutting both and attaching the blue back with no success, please help...

P.S. I had the same Tach on a Celica GTS with the blue wire cut only and it worked fine without the need of programing, I'm totally lost!!

right now the tach you installed is expecting a pulse every time a cylinder fires, e.g. is if it was connected to the coil with a distributor system. the elise has separate coils so each coil fires 1/4 the time which is why your tach reading is off.

Finally, will everyone stop looking for the tach wire at the cluster... its not there (this has been gone over like a hundred times.)

Thanks so you're saying, if I connect 4 coil pickups, one to each coil pack spliced together to the green wire I should get a full reading? I'm just trying to keep my sanity... I'll call auto meter and find out if they have a solution.
