Mystery part

I found this part on the floor to the left of the drivers' seat. I have a 2009 Elise with leather ProBax seats. My first guess is that it is from the seat. But I also have a small metallic rattle that seems to come from the drivers' door whenever I hit a bump on the road. So maybe that is related.

Sorry about the image being clipped off. There is a penny at the right to give you an idea of the size of the part.

Thanks for your help.

You should watch your six. I think someone is trying to shoot you with a poison arrow. Be careful!

The part is made of plastic and is very small and light so I couldn't imagine it playing an important role in the car.

That clip's only role is to hold the passenger side airbag cover on. If the "perforated" plastic dash right in front of the passenger seat isn't loose someone probably broke that one in assembly. Lotus seems to never pick up dropped pieces during assembly. They just seem to pick up another from the parts bin and keep on going.

or, maybe your dash has been apart. These things pop like popcorn when you remove the airbag cover, which is a proper way to get the dash apart.

I finally got my original photo down to size and am posting it.

For any Americans who didn't know this already, all of the Canadian coins are the same size as their American counterparts, only worth less!

I'll check tonight if the part fell out of the air bag cover, but I suspect that it was just an extra one left in the car after manufacturing.

Thanks everyone for their responses.

As said, that is most definitely one of the clips for the passenger's side airbag cover. There are four, one on each corner. The threaded section threads into the cover itself, and the clips go into holes in the dash surrounding the airbag unit. When the cover is removed, either by you pulling it off or the airbag blowing it off, they are designed to breakaway in between the two flanges. This one is intact, so it hasn't been installed. You can check to be sure that none of the corners on your cover are loose, but don't pull too hard or you'll be ordering three more of those to re-attach it.

As RoadDad said, I'd assume that someone just dropped that one and grabbed another. I'd be surprised if it was Lotus, though, as I would assume that those clips are installed into the covers before they make it to the car - I could be wrong though.

Oh, and as to the rattle - is it only when the windows are down? If so, they just need to be adjusted. Do a search here and you'll find notes on how to do that.

Welcome, newish Toronto member. I've been led to believe anytime the airbag cover comes off, the clips have to be replaced. If that one's intact, I would just put it in a baggie marked "stuff" and throw it in the closet.

Just checked the passenger side air bag cover. Pulled lightly on all four corners and it seems fine.

I guess I'll put this one in the bag called "stuff" and then toss it into my "miscellaneous" drawer.

I keep a small bowl on my kitchen counter to collect the various bits that fall off the car.
