Odometer rollback - is it possible?

My new title is clean except it has ODOMETER ROLLBACK in the history square. I have been studying the stack of service statements and it does seem to have a discrepancy between the progression of the dates of services and the mileage.

Is it actually physically possible to rollback an odometer on an '05 Elise? How does one do it? Not sure I ever would but, can I reverse the procedure and "roll it forward"?

Is it possible that the instrument cluster was changed (ie. with one bought off eBay) and the mileage stored in the cluster became the new miles displayed?

Is it possible that the speedo "cable" was disconnected and thus it was no longer tracking miles? Is there a speedo cable on these things?

Cluster is the most likely. They act strangely on occasion, turning themselves on/off, not displaying correct rpm/mph, etc.

It is a CAN input from the ECU.

When I bought my car, it came with a notice the the instrument cluster had been replaced. There is a sticker on the drivers side tub, about where your hip goes stating the mileage at the time of the swap.

Yep.

You can swap the ECU and the mileage in the cluster doesn't change. If you swap the cluster you get whatever mileage is in the "new" cluster.

its stored inside the flash memory of the cluster itself.

they can be reprogrammed to update the odometer, but its rare anyone knows that it, or so it seems.

Does a speedo cable connect directly into the instrument cluster?
