It IS possible to get the right oil filter!

I had to twist the arm of my local Toyota parts desk dude, but I was able to special-order the 90915-10004 oil filter after all! They list at $11.70 and there was no discount for buying the whole case. As with any Toyota part, it's not hard to score a "preferred customer" discount by buying a Camry or something, so it came to $8.99 each. They really were special-order, and came stickered with my name on them.

In comparison, Symbolic charges over $20 for the cheaper domestic filter (90915-YZZA1) and calls it a Lotus filter; Toyota charges $3.99 for that one.

So.. is the YZZA1 really an identical filter as the part's guy insisted? Nope! Same size can, but different internals. How different? I don't know, can anyone tell without powering up a band-saw?

Do any US Lotus service techs install the 10004 that the factory uses, or do they all use the YZZA1?

I'll hoping one of my local Toyota dealers has this filter: 90915-SP010

It's the TRD filter for the 2ZZ-GE.

Why is it so hard to orderer toyota parts online?
I've been buying them from Conicelli parts center for years with automatic %25 discount for my MR2.

Just entered that part number, chose toyota make and got multiple matches of that filter for $6.71. Easy as 1-2-3. From the same site you can see they list for $8.60. Not sure why your dealer wants $11.

The TRD model can be had here
for $28.

Anyone have any experience with canton mecca oil filters?? I was going to put one on my Porsche at one point but never did. They have a spin on filter that will fit our engine, filters better than stock and can increase drain cycles.
Looking to know if anyone has any experience with their products or any thoughts.

When I changed the oil after my Scion's running-in, I bought a Denso filter from Autozone.
It was exactly the same than the Toyota one and I think it's the same filter for my 1.5L as for bigger engines.
I think I paid something like 6-7 dollars.
BUT when I got the Elise serviced in Antwerp (Belgium), they told me they have to use Lotus filter as it might void the warranty if using a MAN filter as did the original dealer where my dad bought his Elise

FWIW, I had my 1000 mile service performed this week - they installed the -10004 filter. Criswell Lotus in Maryland.

anyone think about using the Lexus filter for either the IS300 or the V8 motor? I read awhile back that they are better built filters.

I installed the K&N HP-2009 as Stan suggested. Fits fine and is much bigger, lowers back pressure and filters better. As we can only change half the oil at a time I want the oil kept as clean as possible.

I was told to provide 6 quarts for an oil change if I bring my own oil to the dealer for service.

If your question is why you can only change half the oil at a time -

it is because of the oil coolers. When you drain the sump you leave all the oil in the lines and to the coolers, so only about half gets changed. To change all of the oil you must drain the coolers and lines. This is a much bigger job because then you have to get air out of the system. (The manual says how much a simple drain is and how much a complete flush is).

Here is someone I know from the MR2 world that has cut apart a Toyota 90915-10004 oil filter. Warning, VERY LARGE photos and lots of them:

http://rav4world.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9376

Also, I have been ordering from both Conicelli (Partznet.com) and Bob Ridge Toyota (1sttoyotaparts.com) for years on all my Toyotas.

However, typing in 90915-10004 yields 90915-YZZF1 in the results (just did it now-- yes I was able to order/and see the -10004 in the results before when I ordered my boxes). I am sure, however, that if you call them, they can special order it. They can special order JDM body parts not in the USA catalog (and never came on any North American model-- purely JDM and European/Australian/NZ) for my Celica, for example, so it should not be an issue I would think.

I use that filter on my MR2 Turbo and Celica Turbo (both 3SGTE), my MR2 (4AGE), and now my Exige (2ZZGE).

Change it often like I do (every 1000 miles), and it should be fine. It's a Toyota engine, they don't die.

After some search I found the differences between the stock 90915-10004 and the TRD version. According to TRD Better filtration, less pressure loss, Higher strength. My next Oil filter will be TRD 90915-SP010

Guys, it really doesnt matter. Its just an oil filter. K&N is said to be the best. Its not going to add 5 hp or make the engine last an extra 100k miles.

Who ever said stock was best? Why would aftermarket companies exist if they didnt improve on products?
