It finally worked for me today. What I did different was I held the button without the key in the ignition, put the key in and turned it QUICKLY, heard a whirring sound as the needles adjusted. I was putting the key in slowly and turning it slowly with nothing happening. Try this if you can't get it to work.

reading the Owners Manual for the alarm reset and the tach reset procedures is like reading a book on witchcraft spells.

Just as long as you don't have to use one of these...

I tried the above mentioned reset after reading about it here, and it worked great. Took the car out and ran it at various revs, and it is still reading true.

Does anyone know if this is a common problem with the Elise? If it is, then shouldn't the dealer maybe mention that to a buyer? I mean damn! It scared the crap out of me. My 3 day old car was "broken" there for a bit.

What amuses me is that it's evidently enough of a problem or potential problem that there is a section in the owners manual of how to fix it.. The ghost of Lucas hasn't left yet...

It Works!

FYI--I just tried this procedure (tach and speedo off about 1%), and it worked, first try. Interestingly, the LCD display (shows temp, gas gauge, etc.), showed the (cluster?) software version and date while I did this (didn't notice it at first so I missed the exact details, and I didn't bother to do it again). I think the year displayed on the software version was 2004.

Cheers,

Justin.

Mine's 2 days old and got stuck at 3k, then later 4k and 5k. Technique works but this is best:
Unalarm car completely
Open Door and sit inside
Insert Key
Hold Button continuously
Turn to Positon II REALLY REALLY fast
(If you don't get to Position II within about half-a-second it won't work, and on a newer car it's tricky because the lock sort of sticks at Position I a bit).

Thanks guys!

I've found mine gets stuck about twice a day now, and I have to reset it daily. Does anyone think this needs replacing or will it right itself?

Since mine (and most other people's) has never stuck, I think you ought to take it to the dealer for a warranty replacement...

I tried the manual version and had no luck. The Speedo and tach were off after jump starting the car from sitting so long (I will try and not have this happen too often). The method from Mike above worked great. I did exactly what he said and voila worked great!!! Thanks what a wonderful community. Sending good karma to all and to all a great drive!

does anyone know the cause of the gauges getting stuck? mine only happens sometimes when i turn the headlights on. and i hate it when it happens.

i went on a drive this morning, and my other car friends were laughing at me, when at the stop light, i had to quickly shut off the car, open the door, and do the reset procedure. such a hassle.

remember you have to turn the key fast when doing this procedure. and you have to hear "whirring" sounds coming from the cluster to verifiy it actually worked.

You may end up doing the procedure improperly. And just by simply shutting the ignition off is actually doing a "soft reset". allowing the tach to work temporarily.

Verify you are doing a proper cluster reset first......if problem reoccurs then new cluster is needed. IMO

i got no problem resetting the gauges. it resets properly all the time.

just want to find out if there's any relation between the gauges and the headlight. it seems that the gauges tend to get stuck only when i turn on the headlights.

Shades of Lucas, my Tach and Speedo would not rest at zero. Did the reset procedure and it worked first time. Another alternative I was going to try was disconnecting the battery, but I wanted to avoid that because the alarm resets to it's default setting and I loose a program.
Cheers,
Michael
