Took my Elise into Eric's shop, and haven't been able to reach him for 6 days...

So I dropped my 05 Elise with Eric Gauthier who runs the 1-man shop called Suspension Performance in Mountain View on 10/1/09.

He was keeping me in the loop on the repairs until 10/5/09 via phone and email.

Since Monday 10/5/09 until today 10/10/09 Eric has not responded to my emails or phone calls, and I'm getting worried.

I live a couple hours away from his shop -- I hate to invest a half day driving back and forth just to investigate, but its getting to be time to make the trek back there.

Very unusual to have your car in a shop that doesn’t return calls/emails for 6 days.

I am starting to get REALLY concerned.

I’ve left a bunch of messages and sent many emails with no response over the past week.

Is Eric alright? Did he get into a motorcycle accident or something? (god i hope not! what horrible thought - but those motorcycles are *dangerous*)

Does anyone have a cell number on him? Or some way to contact him?

Never heard of the shop, but that's 10 minutes away from me. I can drop by tomorrow, or late afternoon Monday if you'd like.

Has the car been there past the date that was agreed upon? Or is your concern just that he isn't giving you daily updates on your pride and joy? Was the work progressing how you wanted until you stopped getting feedback, or were there issues coming up that you needed to stay in touch about?

If the guy agreed to do "X" repairs/mods by a certain date, I wouldn't sweat it as long as he is close to the schedule. Better to let him spend his time working on your car than chatting on the phone or answering emails.

Not trying to down play your concern, but I'd be more focused on certain key tasks being completed by certain dates (checkpoints) rather than daily contact.

If its a matter of things not getting done how you wanted them or just having that bad feeling in the pit of your stomach... go check up on the car and find out where things stand.

Sorry but it only takes a few minutes to return a call or email - Poor form on his business skills! I hope he is OK obviously but a quick update will keep customers happy!

No, I see what your getting at that this is simply an "approach to customer service" issue -- perhaps I didn't explain with enough detail, but at this point something is definitely wrong.

The only work he was going to do was spend 1 hour (@ $125/hour) inspecting the car and then produce an estimate of the requested work.

Its been ten days and I still do not have an estimate.

For the last five days, I haven't been able to get a response from him via email or phone.

Something at this point is definitely going on... I hope he is okay.

Given my distance, I really appreciate your offer. Thank you in advance. I will PM you my contact info.

That does indeed not sound good... he has always been very responsive to me. Are there any track weekends/events going on right now? He often attends for technical support...

Pretty sure I saw Suspension Performance guys at Infineon Thursday and Friday...that could be the explanation.

i admire your patience. i would be flipping out if my lotus was in a shop that hadn't returned my calls in 6 days!

if he has been at infineon on thursday & friday, that is no excuse - i would pick up my car as soon as i could and move onto another shop immediately

sounds like its either an act of complete unprofessionalism or a medical thing came up with him or his family... either way, i can definitely appreciate the uncomfortable position your in

Sorry, I misunderstood your first post when you said he had been "keeping you in the loop on repairs" before falling off the face of the earth. Thought you actually had specific work he was doing for you.

"The only work he was going to do was spend 1 hour (@ $125/hour) inspecting the car and then produce an estimate of the requested work."

To me, that's a whole different ball game. If it was only there for an inspection and quote, I'd want an answer and it doesn't bode well for any future work if you can't get an estimate or response and left your car thinking this would be forthcoming ASAP.

I had my car corner balanced at Eric's shop at the beginning of last week. He mentioned he was going to Sears Point to support the Lotus Challenge Series or some such. I suggest he is at the race track and access to the Internet is difficult.

Good news! I got an email reply from Eric. He says he was at Sears Point.

Though my Lotus is in the same state it was before and I still don't have an estimate, I'm very very happy he is alright and not injured or something.

Thank you to everyone for their info and support :-)
