What cleaner do you use? I know you have to be careful not to use something too strong. Also, what kind of cloth or brush do you use? I've been just using the same car soap I use on the rest of the car (but different bucket), using a microfiber mitt and a toothbrush. There's probably a better way...
Mequiars Wheel Brightener. Dilute it down. Spray it on. Hose it off.

I use really cheap foam paint brushes mounted on plastic handles. You can get a 5 of them for 2 dollars or less.

Thanks Larry and Chili Red re: the foam brushes. I probably have some of those lying around my garage.

Another question: Any suggestions for dealing with the drips from the wing edges? They seem to go on and on and on... I thought of leaving some towels underneath, but maybe there's a better way?

I just hand washed my car for the first time (almost 2 years, 7500 miles). never had a hose before or the facilities. sure does look clean now except for all the tiny tar spots I need to remove.

Though a little pricey, a pack of the two drying towels works perfectly for my Elise. MUCH easier than than the chamois I was using. http://www.premiumautocare.com/der-w...ing-towel.html

Foamaster Foam Gun

Ok, this recommendation probably falls under the category of "you've gotta be kidding me." Well, here goes. . .

I bought a Foamaster Foam Gun from Autogeek, and I love it.

http://www.autogeek.net/auqufofogun.html

A fellow ET member showed it to me a few months ago and I thought, "No way in hell am I buying one of those things just to spray down the car --and certainly not for $60."

Well, after doing some research (and $60 later) I find it perfect for washing my car especially when it's absolutely filthy, usually after a track event where the car has been sitting out for several days exposed to the elements. After spraying the car, the foam sits on the surface and kinda pre-dissolves some of the dirt making it easier to remove.

It's a little difficult to explain, but the car feels a lot smoother when I take the sponge/wash mitt to it after that, and I don't feel like I'm grinding dirt into the paint. Give it a try.

No affiliation here, but thought I would share.

Last Saturday I washed my Elise for the first time all by myself. I did it at work. It was great, easy, and fast. I have washed my other cars by myself and it took hours and was not easy. Whatever they use at the dealership is great. The chemicals make it so the car is shinier and if I don't want to dry it, it will air dry without streaks. I used a shammy (I think that's what's called) to dry it because it seemed so cool. Next time I'll try to let it just air dry. It was a great experience over all. I was smiling the whole time and felt more connected to my car. I also saw that it's not easy to wash the car, especially the rear because of all the access to the trunk.

So which wheels do you have? Polished aluminum or anodized?

For the wheel nooks and crannies I use an old toothbrush with it's head trimmed to the right width.
Cheers,

Question - can you use your own soap or do you have to use their stuff?

You'll probably never use anything else.

I did a Zaino job before LOG. Did the track day, wet skid pad, and then went 5 hours out of the way to go to the dragon afterwards. It was filthy and covered in bugs. They all just washed off without even any hard scrubbing. The stuff is amazing. Easy to use, great results, and lasts forever.

I also hear great things about Adams polishes, but I recently tried to make a purchase with them and it didn't work out. 11 days later the very pricey boars hair wheel brush and other items had not shipped so I cancelled. I will say they made it right by offering a gift cert. though.
