Article: Turbo Magazine | VTEC Vs VVTL-i | June 01

In-depth look of Honda's then current VTEC B-Series (B18C in the GSR) vs the new kid of the block Toyota 2ZZ-GE in the Celica. Good read if you don't know how the dual profile camshaft idea works.

Per the article, Toyota > Honda but they gave the nod to the Honda because of aftermarket support (sorta lame and out of scope since they were comparing stock engines).

If we fast forward to today though...
K20 > 2ZZ > B18

What is Toyota/Yamaha's answer to the K20 though... hrmmm

the K20 is the best 4 cylinder production engine in the world right now, period. When will toyota (yamaha maybe) answer it?

The article was also a little one sided as they mentioned using an OBD-I B18C1 instead of a (then) current OBD-II B18C1 because they claim the OBD-II didn't dyno as well. However the real reason was probably that they had an old GSR sitting around and used that

As far as being beating a K-series as far as output and practicality....who knows

Casey @ forcedfed chewed me up in the Lotustalk chatroom when I said something like this there...

Of course B18's have been making 220+ whp NA for years with cams, bolt ons, and a tune thanks to the Honda aftermarket...some of you guys brave enough to not settle with a reflash just gatta invest in those cams + standalone ECUs too with your bolt ons...

Ya, it was an ingenious technology. Although Honda was not the first company to come up with a variable cam profile, what they did was make it simple and reliable as well as bring it to a platform that was accesible to many enthusiasts.

BEAMS...one of my dream motors, Flux!!! LOL!!! Yeah it is expensive/hard to get. For my 91 SW20 i can always consider 1MZ V6 with a Supercharger
