I wouldn't complain about CR's Elise review...just look at their dreadful review of the Atom.

I am surprised CR was as complementary as they were. Can you imagine what their review would be on a high end tube amplifier, Ducati, Patek or Enzo?

I can just see the 300 lb. Consumer Reports guy getting stuck trying to get IN a Lotus.

Then rolling out of the car, going to his computer and writing the meanest review he could think of.

Read CAR MAGAZINES. Much better idea.

It's too bad CR didn't receive a car with Stage 2 exhaust and AC delete. They would have loved it!

I'm thinking of writing a letter to the editor, but I think it won't do anything, anyway. I drive an '05 Elise and 06 Miata (MX-5) and the handling characteristics are obviously NOT the same. Why did they attack the Elise?

OK, I don't care what CR thinks; they are clowns. You may as well get a road test from your local Betty Crocker cooking class.

My interest in the Elise was peaked when I read a "bad" review of it about a year ago. I don't remember the magazine. However, every time they pointed out something they didn't like, my response was "that seems like a car I would enjoy". The people who will appreciate an Elise will find it -- especially as it gets so much press. It is relatively true that there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Just got that CR issue in the mail

I'm reposting Devious post, the thread got long enough most of us probably didn't see it

Consumer Reports, April 2007 issue, page 64:

"Lotus Elise
The Elise is a quick, lightweight, mid-engined roadster. Its 4.6-second 0-60 mph time is very quick, yet the car gets 29 mpg overall. Power comes from a 190-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder supplied by Toyota. The engine needs to be revved to deliver real punch. The Elise is agile but no more so than the Mazda Miata or Porsche Boxster. Cornering limits are very high, but the car is hard to control once past them. You might also have to put up with a harsh, noisy ride; a tight austere interior; a clunky shifter; and difficult cabin access. The canvas top is a nuisance to fold. The Exige is a more powerful coupe version of the Elise."

Also in the same issue:

After looking at the articles in context, I think they hit the nail just off the head but pretty damn close. (i.e. Viper as nimble as Lotus. But, then again our cars take a bit of getting used to handling in the turns. Even CR's professional drivers probably have less time in our type of cars then the others.) What's really surprising none of the above really smoke the elise 0-60, of course above that is a different story.

But, here's where I had a problem CR is Smaller then Time and a bit more hard to handle. I'd rate reliability of delivery third, behind Popular Mechanics, and Mo' Big Busty Women. The Text under the cars is hard to read as compared with Car and Driver, and the Recycler. Though, I rate it's four color graphics, ink tones, and clarity number one, followed second by Hustler and that perenial favorite Cars Gone Wild.

This thread is a waste of time! The Elise (or Exige) will run circles around the Miata on a track- It's not built for comfort, It doesn't have a great stereo, great A/C, etc.; it's built to stick to a track like it's on rails- It's a race car people!!

...and furthermore, if Lotus was trying to appeal to CR, the Elise would weigh as much as the Miata-

Okay, I feel better-

"Dry Breaking" (sic)? Don't these magazines have an editor?

I keep mine wet, it hasn't broken so far.
