Lotus Drive & Picnic in Los Angeles

I wanted to propose leading y'all on this trip up to Mt Wilson for a picnic. The map at the bottom is the largest photobucket would allow, but I hope you can tell it is a fun drive.

Where? - The idea is that we meet at Eatz cafe on Los Feliz just east of the 5 fwy at the Los Feliz municipal golf course. This is a convenient place a stones throw from the 5 with plenty of parking. Mind the clam on the driveway!

<img src=http://www.roadsidepeek.com/roadusa/southwest/california/socal/socaleats/socalcafe/eatzcafelosfeliz.jpg>

When? - Meet between 11:00am and 11:30am. Leave at 11:30 for Mt Wilson. As for the date, perhaps Sunday August 3rd if there is no big event I am forgetting about?

There are gas options just east of Eatz and we should arrive with our mini coolers packed with the goods so nobody has to wait. Get there on the earlier end if you want to grab a bite at the cafe.

Armed with the route, we would start our shady, winding drive and regroup at Foothill and Angeles Crest highway at the 210. Another opportunity to gas up, buy a beverage and remove or replace the top for the sunny part of the drive.

At the top we'd enjoy the view and break into our picnic lunches at the covered tables.

Comments and suggestions? Sound good?

All you'd need to bring is a sammy and a drink,... maybe all that and a bag of chips. Call it the "Lotus Bag Lunch and drive."

Okay, I should have been more clear that at the top of Mt Wilson there are tables under cover. We don't need to bring any picnic gear or anything like that. I know how much stuff we'd love to NOT lug up there in our cars.

I'm honestly not sure of the mileage but I estimate it to be a 45 minute drive. It's hard to say because I used to do this route with a gang of hard core vintage scooterists, so it took longer. I wasn't going to tell anybody about that until we got up there. Wouldn't want anyone here to think it's a wussy route.

When I'm in town I'm usually up for a Sunday drive!

... but can only do it in the morning because my afternoons are typically booked.

I might be in according to my work schedule - You should check out this thread where we are trying to organize regular things like this for So Cal people and post there as well, Seems like Hal would love to go on a drive he does not have to lead for once !

It's what you make of it. You gain a lot of altitude, so the drive down is a totally different drive. Hope to see you there.

I would start it some place off the 210 (there's a Sport Chalet, if it's still there, a block from the 2 and the 210.) People will be coming from all different directions and you're making a lot of people go out of their way.

Yep, that Sports Chalet is still there. It's on Foothill just a block and a half or so East of Angeles Crest. The parking lot is in the back. It might make a good collection point before you hit the mountain.

The drive would be CONSIDERABLY shorter and you'd miss the nice shady curves, but since we are doing a regroup right up there, figure to meet us at the shell station on Angeles Crest (2) just north of Foothill around 11:45 - 12:00 for the second leg.

You can never make it ideal for everyone, but having it start right off the 5 and regroup right off the 210 ain't bad. Thanks for the suggestion. Hope you 210ers join us. (Eventually, I'd like to coordinate with a group leader volunteer of the 210ers so we will know when everyone has arrived at the Shell.)

I'm sorry I didn't take a good look at your route. Actually where you cross the 134 would be a good spot. Before that it's only straight surface streets

I'm totally open to meeting at the In 'N' Out Burger on Harvey (N of the 134, W of the 2) if that's a preferred place. It's a pretty good launch point, just not as shady and park-like. It's hard to say which one will be less crowded on a Sunday.

Is this still going to happen at the location/time/date as the first original post at the start of this thread?
