This thread on Ferrari Chat follows the arc of this issue in great detail:
IS this the end of ********** at the VCR ? - FerrariChat.com The police were only there to keep the peace and protect the security guards and process servers. Last week, after the security guards kicked me off, the police stopped me and said I was welcome to stay and "fight the good fight" which I guess meant being served and going through the court battle. I left, deferring to my general respect for private property rights. I've re-thought that a bit for two reasons: 1) The legalities of owning property that is open to the public and 2) the corollary battle between the tenants (some who want the car show and some who don't) and the landlords. I think the private property rights of the landlord trump everything here, including the tenant's rights, unless there is a contract stating otherwise.

Coming from the property owner side of the fence, imagine the huge nightmare for a property owner...
Insurance to cover literally millions of dollars worth of cars / bodies on my lot would never be worth it...especially with people acting juvenile. If the owner's insurance got wind of the event, the insurer would likely drop the owner post haste. That being said, approaching the business owners is only the start...the property owner themselves has to be on board with the "organizer" and a liability waiver of some sort would have to be involved. |

... except for the 100 octane at the pump at the Unocal station 3 miles from my house. Sure, it's around $6, but... it's there, 24-7...
![]() Agoura 76 28203 Dorothy Dr. Agoura Hills (818) 991-6241 COMPETITION 100 UNLEADED RACING GASOLINE Like not needing any emissions controls or any smog checks, EVER, on either of my motor-swapped 440ci 1970 cars? That IS pretty oddball... ![]() Having SuperCarSundays a couple miles from my house was fun for a while, as we all got to see some interesting and rare vehicles, but it was getting way out of hand with all the rows of identical cars, photogs on the sidewalk, etc. I won't mind if the area cools down a bit, so we can just keep it quiet and enjoy the canyon roads without attracting unwanted attention and crowds.

For once the private property owner is deciding what he does and does not want on his property, not a governement agency. Usually it's the other way around.

100 octane at Unocal = Chesebro Road / Agoura Road exit from 101 southbound... about 2 or 3 exits west of Mulholland / Valley Circle, where SuperCarSunday was held.
I used it in the Lotus and I think the ECU 'compensated' for it; it wasn't like I could really feel a big difference... but the old 'analog' 440's in my Cuda and Charger sure like it! ![]()

At least the police didn't give street racing tickets to all the participants which happens a lot in other car gatherings here in SoCal....

Originally, this SuperCarSunday thing was supposed to be over and done with before any of the businesses in that mini-mall opened up, so no harm, no foul. The idea was, let's all go and get coffee at the VCR at 7am, when they are the only thing open down there, and get up into the canyon roads before the other business open at 9 or 10 and want their parking lot back. Sounds reasonable, right? But over the last year or so the thing started to NOT end at 9am; cars and spectators came from far and wide, Ps and Fs would line up across the road to organize for group drives (attracting unwanted CHP attention in the canyons), and there was often an expensive car with no placards parked in the handicapped spaces. Double-plus-un-good! For a couple of weeks last spring, somebody (from VCR maybe?) would go out with a megaphone and try to get people to move out around 9:30, but nobody really listened... and so it came to this. Cops always seemed cool though. I never got a ticket for no front plate, and none of my cars have one. Never saw them chase anyone down after a too "vigorous" acceleration from the exit... of which there were plenty. Standing around talking with one CHP at VCR last year, he said, "Look, man, have a good time out there, but remember: if canyon residents call and complain about groups of sports cars 'racing' past their house, we've got no choice but to head out there and try to round 'em up. You definitely do NOT want us to write 'street racing' on your ticket, and according to my boss, one car speeding is a ticket, but two cars speeding is a race. Best idea if you want to have a little fun is to roll solo, enjoy, and keep it under 100, okay? If we catch you going triple digits up there, it's all over. Love the Elise, by the way, those are awesome cars. I sat in an Exige once but my head was hitting the roof..." Seemed like a pretty reasonable attitude for a cop talking to a guy with no front plate, right? ![]()

Here's an email I got from a buddy about the whole thing.
Sent: Saturday, October 24, 2009 2:08 PM Subject: ALERT! AUTO ENTHUSIASTS NOT WELCOME AT SANTANA ROW!! Importance: High Colleagues: Today is a dark day in the annals of motorsports. Security forces at Santana Row, with assistance from San Jose PD, made it known that those who congregate at ‘The Row’ on Saturday mornings are “loitering on private property”. And further, we were apprised that this egregious behavior will no longer be tolerated. We were we ordered to leave the parking lot where mostly mature, affluent and educated sports car fans have convened peacefully for over two years. Further, Nazi-style tactics were employed when a business owner promoting his detailing service was threatened with incarceration and having his vehicle impounded. The premise for this selective enforcement? The “officers” reported that there had been complaints about revving engines… at this unsanctioned gathering. Gee, I lived at Santana Row for 18 months and complained vociferously about the noisy cars and motorcycles cruising and racing engines at ‘The Row’ every night -- with no relief. And when I inquired to City Council and the SJPD, I was told they could not enforce any traffic laws because these atrocities occurred on ‘Private Property’. Never during the time I was a resident, did I observe SR Security or SJPD attempt to address, detain or apprehend outrageously bad driving, riding or ‘loitering’ behavior. Now here’s the rub: If nothing could be done about the hooligans and Harleys that make it necessary for Santana Row residents to wear earplugs to sleep -- because the perpetrators were on ‘private property’, how is it that they can now roust car owners (who include Silicon Valley CEOs, tech giants, entrepreneurs and other professionals) who convene quietly on a Saturday morning? Granted, some of the exhausts of classic, exotic, sports and muscle cars are louder at idle and under legitimate power, than a Prius. However, they neither rumble nor roar like the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ who cruise ‘The Row’ unfettered on a daily and nightly basis. The final and HUGE affront to this ‘show of force’ is the disruption of legitimate networking and marketing, which it now appears is akin to felonious conduct. Having participated in this event several times, I have personally witnessed the exchange of business cards – and the distribution of brochures and flyers promoting businesses, causes and events. OMG!! Had I known I was consorting with known felons, I would have sold my sports car and disavowed knowing anyone connected with motorsports. Who’s the biggest loser here? Not the enthusiasts, who will find another more hospitable environment to meet and mingle with like-minded souls. It’s the Santana Row merchants; many of whom enjoy business from the ‘car guys’ and their friends. The other losers are the families and young children who stop by to see the ‘cool cars’ on Saturday mornings. If you were there today, you know the rest of the story. If you weren’t there today, I would not encourage you to return to ‘The Row’. A sad day indeed… Enjoy Motorsports! (just not at ‘The Row’)

sad, so where do we go next?

Security showed up, more security showed up and they looked for the owner. He was off talking with other onlookers. Eventually they told him to shut it down. The straw that broke the camel's back? Shoreline Park has some parking lots, Great America has a bunch, and there is even an Albertsons here in Sunnyvale that has been closed for five years, with a huge empty parking lot. I wonder if the new use committee for NASA Moffit Field might entertain a use like this. Unfortunately I do not think you will get much support. Since I returned from a summer away in September, the attendance has been small, the event seems to have run its course. I was usually the only Lotus and the event was dominated by BMW sedans and Corvettes. Michael Last edited by sandsmuseum : 10-29-2009 at 04:24 PM. Reason: fix missing quote |
