Colorado Sales Tax & Registration??
Just moved to Denver from Illinois and still planning to buy an Elise (though the real estate costs here may postpone that). Can anyone give me a rough idea of the cost of sales tax and registration (annually) on a new Elise? Or even used if a year or two older model makes a difference?
I've heard registration here is pretty crazy. Thanks, Shawn |

Sales taxes are based on where exactly you live. If you live in a city boundary it might be higher than other areas. There are websites that show this, but depending on what zip your in, it can be different.
You pay sales taxes at the time of purchase, and registration at the registration places around the city. It's not cheap, but there are more expensive taxes and registration. I think I paid about $800 to get tags, and sales tax for me was 2.5% (others are higher up to 6 for places like boulder I think). As your car deprieciates, your registration fees go down a lot.

I live in Fort Morgan Co. and my Registration was 702.00 for a 06 Elise. I was told however it would have been only 500.00 and chge if I had not been 2 mo late. I thought that as long as the temp tag was legal, so was i. Live and learn. The vast majority of this fee is tax deducible for what that is worth. State taxes were 2.9%. Next yr. Registration fee will be approx. 500.00.

Yeah, that doesn't make sense. So is there something like 30 days to register a new vehicle with the DMV while the temp tag doesn't expire that soon?
In Illinois, if you purchase from a dealer, you pay everything that day and receive your actual plate in the mail. |

In the past when I leased car's in Co. the temp was good until you receivedthe paperwork in the mail from the dealer. This time I purchased the Elise outright and was given the title day of purchase. I think I was so excited that I did not pay attention to the salesman and thought obviously the temp was good till it had expired. I was wrong! Incidently if you buy an Elise give Ferrari of Denver a shot as they really sorted the car out prior to delivery. The car has been problem free and will be going in for it's first service soon. Denver Ferrari once a year also sponsor's a free track day for all it's customer's. This year it was in Golden, West of Denver. Hope this help's.

You didn't pay a penalty. The thing is that the temp tag is for convenience but they still tax you from the time of purchase. So, if you wait the full 2 months to register your car, you actually have to pay for 14 months. The 2 months you never paid plus the 12 from the time you showed up.

I've blocked the actual figure out (the shock still hasn't worn off in a year and a half) but it was sizeable. I had to pay the registration fee ($800 IIRC) and Denver sales tax, which is 7%. I had been used to the $26 fee to register the ol' Fiat prior to the Elise...
Housing prices have cooled off in Denver, so you shouldn't be killed moving here. But it is expensive to live in the city; still @ $300-400 a square foot...I know that's not LA, SF or NYC, but it can be a shock. Good luck! Tom |

What do they base this fee on for people who move to Colorado? Blue book value?

Yep-auto value...purchase price when new, then NADA book value thereafter.
My second year tags were @ $500. I happily rolled around for four months with expired tags (totally forgot about renewing them-I swear!) until an eagle-eyed police officer pulled me over and graciously reminded me tags would be a good idea. The lowest it will drop to over time is $26, I believe.Tom |
