Ha ha! That thing was scary!

The coolest car there was an old MG Midget race car - no windshield! The circuit car bears some resemblance to it!

Video

Here is some video of Stuart (M Coupe), Bill Kim (3 Series) and me playing at MSRC last weekend. Watch the top G meter dance as the car gets some slip angle. Best time was a 2:28:78, which is a _lot_ faster than the first time I ran this track in August. Still looking for more - data shows that I am really inconsistent under braking.

Big Bend in 4th vs 3rd. I like 3rd due to the extra margin of safety I get with throttle steering, but it might be slower. In 4th I don't feel as comfortable. Not sure which is really faster. Thoughts?

I think we can carry hella speed through Big Bend, and third forces too much braking. I'm already exiting the corner on the cam. If I can really maximize entry, I'll be on cam in 4th well before corner exit - so 4th would definitely be better.

On the other hand, the one time I went _really_ hard into Big Bend I couldn't get to the apex and spun. It will require an earlier turn in. But I think it's faster, so I am working on it.

Holding 4th through Ricochet too. I am not convinved that is faster, but it isn't slower and save the tranny a shift.

By the way - I am seeing 1.56G coming up the hairpin after the bottoms!

I agree with Jefferson, I'm going to practice staying in 4th in ricochet and big bend to get more comfortable with it. I'm needing to shift out of 3rd sooner and sooner after apex, mine as well keep my work load down and focus on using all my phat RA1s...

Sounds like you found some good time Jefferson ... I'll look at my tape and see if I was able to match ya. I feel I'm in the 2:28s, but a closer look at my vidi time stamps will tell the true tail. Alex's monster 911 really made me drive hard and clean, so bound to have throw a decent lap together... I've got a RTDbrace coming soon too... Just imagine the stick with some Nitrons or Ohlins ...

Oh, I'll be running some member sessions this Friday morning at MSR Cresson, since my godfather Roberto has requested my presence...

Frankie -

Yeah, my best laps are always chasing Stuart. Which just means that I am not consistent enough without a target to chase. Most of my times were a lot higher than 2:28.

I think you are carrying more speed through Horseshoe. You are also better about slowing between Boot Hill and Tombstone so that you maximize speed onto the straight. I tend to try to hold too much speed earlier.

I think we'd both get a lot faster if we were in the same run group and could compare directly.

I have no doubts us playing together will only gain us both speed and time. We could have done more of that at LOG if someone would stay on the track ... If Rick will ever fit me in, I'd be happy to play more...

You do take horseshoe a bit tighter than I typically. You take the toilet bowl a bit wider than I do too. Sounds like you get some reasonable wheel spin on the exits of some of the tighter turns. 245/45R16 rear tire definitely seems to help that ... The track grip from boot hill to tombstone to me is getting worse over time, I use to beable to go flat out, not so anymore.

How much do you feel your swaybar factors into difference in feel and setup? You are much more handsy. How does the trail braking feel too? My current tire setup, esp in the new section, I can trail brake like a MaD mAn ... Fatter front tire also make the front caliper seem inadequate now too...

Ah, anytime you want to come up to MSR for a members day, let me know, then we can work on our secrets of speed... Next year for sure ...

You bunch of ninnies with your 3rd/4th gear debates. I'm on the second cam in 6th gear coming out of big bend. My 315-35R20 Hoosiers squeeling like mad. I know I'm getting at least 2 Gs because the fuzzy dice are swinging out at least 60 degrees to the side.

I need to grow bigger fuzzy dice in order to break 2:30

I was trying out different things in the bowl. After looking at the data, I am convinced that the tighter line works better.

In Horseshoe, I think going wider would be better. The tradeoff is that I'll have to take Buzzard Neck slower. Usually that would be a good tradeoff, but Horseshoe leads immediately into turns that are traction limited. So slightly faster in Horseshoe doesn't lead to later benefits. In other words, Buzzard Neck is a type 2 corner while Horseshoe is in the middle of a complex type 3 corner. So I don't want to compromise Buzzard Neck very much to improve Horseshoe. I think it is just a subtle change.

Not sure about the swaybar. I don't think it helps any without the better shocks. It does make the car dance more. But I'd probably be more handsy anyway. I tend to do slide cars a lot.

Yeah - we should definitely do that. It would give us time to look at DAQ between sessions too.

You're pretty close. You just need some bada RA1s on black wheels. The black wheels are important because the extra heat generates horizontal vortices that push your car into the apex.

After some member sessions today a MSR Cresson, running 4th gear thru big bend yeilded slightly higher top speeds before braking into rattlesnake.

Once I got the feel down, using 4th felt good and I like the less work. Still optimizing entry speed, but on my setup I'm on cam in 4th right around the apex. It's a crazy fast dive in on the entry, good pucker...

Sounds like you're getting on cam a lot earlier that I was last weekend. I'd hit cam close to track out. So either your tires really do provide that much more grip (doubtful) or you've really got a good line going. Good stuff.

Holy badaraones! [ba-dä-ray-O-nees] (bada RA1s)

On cam in 4th at the apex of big bend? Man I've got some a SERIOUS two years of practicing to do!

Remeber my gearing is slightly lower comparing 225/50R16 to my 245/45R16 (even lower compared to OEM 225/45R17). Thou the front stick from the 225s is what the car needs for my driving style. Front end grip for braking is phenominal too. I think you'd notice a significantly better turn in feel, grip, and stability over the 205s, esp for crazy fast entry's into buzzard neck. My tires are at or below 4/32s, so the grip is getting really good now. Only took 35 track session to scub in, god these Cartoon Car is easy on tires, just amazing .

You've definitely got to do the Steve Hill early brake on power on turn in. If not, you'll get some serious tail wag if the rear is not seat with some throttle when you dive her in hard. It's alot like ricochet, except it's faster and the the turn is much longer. Even at my current what I consider pretty crazy entry speeds, I'm still driving her to the exits, there lots of track out there. Man, when we nail this turn, it will be crazy how fast it can be done, and if we miss it, there will be some awesome dirt rooster-tailing... Ah, isn't this stuff fun ...

I'll definitely be running a members day in Jan, will definitely let you know Jefferson ...
