Going to Sebring Skip Barber- 27 Mar to 1 April
Hey everyone,
It looks like I am going to step up my game on the sport driving side. I love the sport and have decided to head out to a couple of back-to-back Skip Barber Racing schools. I'm looking at the 3-day racing school and 2-day advanced racing school in the open wheel cars. I'll be taking the schools at Sebring (a track I've never been on) in Florida. The schools are 27-29 March and 31 March- 01 April. I just talked to Joe Thomas at the school. Who answered a bunch of my questions. I still have a few for you locals though. 1) Place to stay? I don't need much. I'm fine with a clean bed and shower, ala the F1 hotels in Europe. $100 or less per night is probably about right. 2) Where to eat? Love to get some hole-in-the-wall good restaurants to try while I am there. 3) How to get around? I'm assuming renting a car for a week will be my best bet? 4) Anybody else planning on going? I am from the Seattle area so I'll be a visitor if anyone wants to grab a beverage or a dinner. Thanks for the advice folks! Best, Trevor |

you should have came to laguna... i coach for skip out there. sebring is a great track though and you'll have fun.
1) Look into the hotel at the track (use to be called chateau elan). During these schools it might be reasonably priced. Otherwise, there are plenty of motels in Sebring. 2) Ask the instructors.. Since they are local they will fill you in. Lots of good places though - Italian, Mexican, even Alligator burgers... 3) You will have to rent a car. I would fly into Orlando and drive down to Sebring. Have fun! Robbie Montinola

I went there back in 99 - you will have a blast. I think you run the 'New Sebring' course unless things have changed.

Thanks for the tips! I'll probably do some training at leguna in the next couple of years, hopefully, our paths will cross then. |

Apparently, this is the "Sebring Modified" what ever that means.

Yeah - it takes out a lot of the straight-aways which is nice since those cars are a little slow. Check out the pic - the red line after 13 goes into 3 right before the carousel. You will have a blast!

Too bad you do not get the full course. Turn 1 and 17 are two of the most intense corners in the US. See if you can get Gerardo Bonilla as your instructor.
Stay at the Chateau Elan right at the track, it should be reasonable, if not there is a new Holiday Inn Express and another good place called The Inn on The Lakes. All within 6 minutes of the track. DO NOT STAY AT THE KENNELWORTH LODGE! There is a great thai place there but I do not want to say where, since it is very small and will get found out and I will loose my favorite place to eat. So PM me and I will reveal it's location. Sorry guys, I am a selfish prick when it comes to this place in Sebring. I saw Allan McNish (factory Audi driver) there last year and made him promise not to divulge the location. He knew exactly why I made him promise..... Other food is typical corporate kitchens Outback etc... The restaurant at the Inn on The Lake is pretty good as well.

If you want some real authentic southern style BBQ go to Sonny's and get the Super Combo platter (pork, beef, chicken and ribs). You won't be disappointed. You get 2 sides ( BBQ beans, fried okra are my favorites) and corn bread too. Get the sweet tea and leave room for the homemade banana pudding. Less that $20 for it all. It's a belly buster!

I just got off the phone with Joe at Skip Barber. I'm signed up for both the 3-day and 2-day courses. I attached the course layout of each below. Thanks for all the help with places to stay and eat!
The 3-day is only the short course, but the 2-day is the full course. Their reasoning was good I thought. The shorter course, allows you to focus on few corners and come around twice as often, allowing twice as much feedback. Then the full course for the advanced, gives you something new to learn (for us non-locals) and more room on the track. Price wasn't too bad either. $6803.20 for both schools together (20% discount on the 2-day). Price includes all available insurance. Insurance was interesting. $375 for the 3-day limits liability from unlimited (value of damages) to $2000. The 2-day was a different scheme. $500 deposit flat liability of $5500. Which if you think about hints that they are taking some risk in the 2-day that they are not being paid for. One can assume they are relying on the "improved driver" to mitigate that. Anyway, I'm total stoked for this. Hope to meet a few of you if you have the time. It looks like I'm gonna be wide open on the 30th. |
