Sounds like a good idea - but - if people pick the car up at the airport they'll get a big surprise when they try to put their luggage in.

Can anyone explain the choice of initial states? California, Florida, Arizona and Nevada I can understand. But why Pennsylvania?

The Amish are getting sick of the horse and buggy thing.

Hopefully, the rental agencies will at least put decent performance tires on them once the Yokos wear out. I can already imagine rental elises out there with bargain basement economy tires. Add cheap tires to throttle lift and the rental elises will have a short life span.

Two rental companies in Los Angeles that I know of have stopped renting Elises because they got THRASHED way too easily.

Any car with a clutch is a BAD renter.
They'll soon find out.

When you have a potential weak link exposed like that (clutch), it's guaranteed to fail.

I can already see it:
$300/day
$1/mile
$300/day for insurance

have fun!

At Los Angeles rental companies, the people who rent the cars are 100% responsible for all damages incurred - on their own insurance. People driving a small, elite sports car that they have no idea how to drive, that they will demolish when they go up Grandma's driveway.

REALLY dumb ass idea.

Don't know, several agencies in europe and UK have been renting elises and other high end vehicles for years, extremely expensive. I just don't see them at your standard avis, I'm sure it's going to be a high end specialist rental agency. Heck they may even have a scan tool so they can check how the car was driven each rental before handing back the sure to be hefty deposit.

You don't see Boxsters, Caymans, Z4s, TTs or even Corvettes populating major rental car fleets because there is sufficient demand for those vehicles. Farming out vehicles to rental fleets diminishes the exclusivity of a premium brand and ultimately cheapens the product. What's so special about any car you can rent from Hertz or Alamo?
I disagree. My sense is that demand for the Elise has now all but dried up because most of the original target market (the rabid enthusiasts) who did their homework at the launch have either bought one, upgraded to the Exige or taken a pass in favor of something else.

What Lotus has missed is the market of upscale (but hardly rich), regular folks who would love the feel of Lotus as a daily (or almost daily) driver, but who have never given the Elise a shot, thinking that it's either too much car for them or way too expensive. Introducing this car to the public via rental fleets strikes me as a much more efficient way to get the attention of the market I'm talking about than through mass advertising.

Last year, nearly 30,000 Z4's (comparable price point and product segment) were sold. Lotus could double its unit sales if it could steal 10% of just BMW's share of this niche market. Think what it could do against the Corvette if postioned properly. As a replacement for my old Z3 two years ago, the Elise has been brilliant. I used both as daily drivers and found purchase price, maintenance costs, reliability and creature comforts to be roughly comparable. The driving experience and wow factor, however, put it the Elise in an entirely different league. If people only knew!!

Well, now they can rent one and find out.

Letter given at car rental office to person renting a Lotus Elise:

Dear Hertz renter:

Congratulations! You are renting a Lotus Elise, one of the most incredible sports cars in the world!

Just a few things to look out for:

Your trunk will hold one (1) overnight bag. That's it. Sorry. Be sure the bag is totally secure or it will ram a hole in the tender skin of the Elise. Damage could run as high as $1000.

If you know what's good for you you will exit driveways and enter driveways at no more than 2 mph. Any faster and extreme damage can occur to the front of the car, known as the front clam. Damage could run as high as $2700

Do not exceed the rpm limit in any gear. Over revving the engine will cause the rev limiter to cut in, but you may have already done EXTREME DAMAGE to the engine. Damage could run as high as $2000.

Check oil and water levels yourself. DO NOT trust this to the rental guy, as he has no idea how to service a Lotus and could care less if the engine explodes from misuse. Damage could run as high as $3500.

Do not attempt to remove the top yourself as you have no idea what you are doing. Failure to do this correctly could result in tremendous damage to the car or the interior. Damage could run as high as $2500.

If the top is off and it starts to rain do not attempt to put the soft top on. You have no idea what you are doing. Get the car into a garage area and WAIT for the rain to stop. Damage from rain could destroy the interior and run as high as $2000.

If you are going to park the car overnight DO NOT let anyone else drive it or park it. We are sorry for the inconvenience. You and you alone are the only one who can drive the car and be responsible for it. Believe us, you do not want anyone else driving/wrecking this car. Damage could run as high as TOTALED.

Do not take this car into a car wash. If you want it clean, stop and buy rags and borrow a hose and wash it yourself. The car will be extremely damaged in an automatic car wash. Damage to the finish could run as high as $2000.

Do not let a small child ride with you, even if you promised him/her that they could. They could be killed by the air bag. Damage could be as high as LIFE IN JAIL for attempted murder.

Please read over 100 areas of the car that could be instantaneously damaged by a simple mistake. And don't forget the small print that states that you are responsible for any SUV's that plow into the back of the car. Oh yes, and remember, if anyone eggs the car -- YOU pay to get the car repainted.

Thank you and enjoy your Lotus rental experience.

Dito. Yeah, great way to make people realize the Elise isn't right for them before they make a finanical commitment (which keeps some owners in thier cars) , and increase insurance costs for the rest of us, devaluates the brand (oh, wait ).

Now if I want a track only car, why would I buy an Elise when I can just rent one for $400 a day?

But I guess Lotus needed a quick solution for the surplus. Short term - excellent plan. Long term -
