Vintage Europas II
Been digging around trying to alleviate my ignorance which has lead to some confusion.
Anyone have a clear explanation of the differences over lapping between S1, S2, TC, Special, Type 47, Type 54, Type 65, Type 74 designations. It all seems to blur together and sources seem to contradict each other. Thanks much.

I believe S1 was the Renault engined car, the S2 had the Twincam. The Special probably refers to the black and gold pinstriped JPS liveried car. Type 47 was the race car. Not sure about the other Type designations.

Woah! Europa history violation. The Wikipedia article looks right to me.
Roadgoing S1, bonded chassis, Renault 1470cc engine = Type 46 Race version of S1 = type 47, 1594cc Ford-Cosworth TC engine. Roadgoing original S2, bolt-on chassis. Renault 1565cc, electric windows = Type 54. Federal version of S2 = Type 65. I owned 1287R ![]() There was a race car called Type 62. The TC road car with cut down sails is the Type 74 in both regular and Special form. The Special refers to increased horsepower (126bhp) and 5 speed box of final cars. Europa Engineering/Banks Service Station can build Type 47 and Type 62 replicas. Try this link for more info Lotus Europa

There are significant body changes across the models, in addition to the obvious cutting of the sails. Front fender curves, headlight height, "wart" lights up front, turn signal and tail light styles, etc. Some changes are obvious, others not so much.
Major interior changes between S1 and S2 as well. Some suspension changes up front. Jim Lotus Europa 46/0363 Restoration Site |
