Last Train to Clarksville
Written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, the song tells the story of a young man who has been drafted and is trying to arrange one last date with his girlfriend before shipping off to Vietnam (thus explaining the repeated line, "... and I don't know if I'm ever coming home").[1] Like many hit Monkees songs of the era ("Cuddly Toy", "Pleasant Valley Sunday'"), the song pairs a fast, chipper melody with darker lyrics. Micky Dolenz performs the lead vocal, with Boyce playing acoustic guitar.
The song is strikingly similar to The Beatles' "Paperback Writer" both in the style of "jangly" guitar and the chord structure. Even more striking is the similarity of the guitar riff to the earlier one in "Blue's Theme", by Davie Allan and the Arrows, from the Peter Fonda biker movie, "The Wild Angels". Recorded at RCA Records Studio A, Hollywood, on 25 July 1966, "Last Train to Clarksville" peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The song's title appears to refer to the city of Clarksville, Tennessee, and by implication to nearby Fort Campbell, Kentucky, but Hart claims that this is a coincidence and that the choice of the name "Clarksville" was arbitrary. There never was a train station in Clarksville. Tennessee/Kentucky.....close enough ![]() |

Jon:
Contact Chris Layton of the Tennessee Area Lotus Enthusiasts (TALE) at (901) 619-4872. My in-laws are in Clarksville about 45 minutes north of Nashville. Keep in mind you are now only about 4-5 hours from Road Atlanta. Feff |

Jon,
If you're moving to Kentucky, the closest Lotus dealer is probably MAG (Midwestern Auto Group) in Columbus, Ohio. Although it's been a while now since I had mine in for service, my experience was pretty good. If she's not too busy with her new baby, Jenn (OneFastLotus) lives in Kentucky and may be willing to answer a few basic questions for you.

I thought Clarksville was in Tennessee. There are a few of us a couple hours north in Louisville. Myself, CrashTestDummy & OneFastLotus and a few (literally three others) as of yet unidentified owners. There are a few british car shows and exotic cruises here throughout the year, you'll definitely have to come up and check them out.
I would definitely recommend getting your service performed at MAG in Columbus Ohio. It's a bit of a drive but I've had service performed there and Lotus of Atlanta and the difference is beyond night and day. LOA was an absolutely terrible nightmare whereas MAG goes out of their way to help us in any way they can and ensures that our visit is nothing short of great. If you're looking for non-dealer service I can definitely recommend a couple of competent mechanics in the Louisville area, they will do the work (if I don't have time to do so) on my car once the warranty is up. Deals Gap as well!

I haven't seen hide nor hair of Jenn in ages. Frankly, if it wasn't for her, I'd never have found this board and never been able to get my Elise. That stemmed from a random internet chat room encounter. I'm betting they thought I was just another moron kid in the chat rooms. <grin> Btw, I'm in Knoxville which isn't too far south of Lexington. If you are heading out this way, we have some awesome roads to play on!

Don't feel bad. They are worse in person! I'd rather drive my car from Knoxville, Tn back down to Dimmit in Clearwater to not only get better and friendlier service, but it STILL comes out cheaper when you figure gas and mileage on the car. I haven't tried Lotus of Durham yet, though I'm not sure they are even around anymore.

Jon,
I used to live in Clarksville. Exit 1 actually. Anyway, do not. I say again, do not, go to Lotus of Atlanta. They are the worst I have ever dealt with. Untrustworthy. You will enjoy many of the back roads around clarksville. Esp around Trenton. Take care, |
