Sorry, it's another one of those threads by me.
We will be heading from Santa Fe to Vegas in two days time, and were looking for anything worth doing along the way. It's a long drive so they would need to be close to the main route and quick to do. Speaking of the route, should we just go to Albuquerque and then take 40? At what point should we cut up to Vegas? Thanks ![]() |

Grand Canyon & Hoover Dam. The former may not be quick to do, but I think you'll find the later is on your way.

Definitely take 40W and go from Flagstaff -> Sedona.
The road is unbelievable and Sedona is a top 10 resort in the U.S. Definitely worth the slight distraction.

The drive to Sedona is cool if you take the state highway through Oak Creek Canyon... not I-17.
I just drove 400 miles today from Mesa to Holbrook through Clifton and Alpine. The Clifton-Morenci copper mine is the largest open-pit copper mine in North America. The road pretty much goes through the mine on a bridge of land between pits. There's one point where a conveyor belt runs over the road and drops ore in a big pile very close to the road. That's where the twisties start and the fun begins. US-191 from the mines to the Mogollon Rim goes for about 80 or 90 miles and has many, many curves. Along most of that route, they don't bother with signs for individual curves... S-curve sign, 15 MPH, next 15 miles. Once reaching the Rim, the elevation is above 9000, lot's of huge pine trees, and more twisties. I saw three wild turkies today on the Rim. The first two were beside the road and I stopped about 5 feet from them. By the time I got out to shoot a picture, they had crossed the road and were in the woods. A little later I had to stop for a wild Turkey standing in the middle of the road! In 90 miles of driving, I only saw three other vehicles on the road. Saw some snow in a few places, too. I'm exhausted!

Take the shortest route possible...The less money you will spend else where and the more you can support our economy
J/K I would definitely stop and see the Grand Canyon, and maybe check out the Sky Walk at the West Rim. Also see Hoover Dam. |
