What's happened to Arizona? Photo radar crazy.

I was last in Phoenix in October 2008. When back last weekend for a funeral and photo radar stations have popped up like weeds.

There's two photo radars in Tonopah and there's a photo radar setup at almost every exit in downtown on the I10 and on the US60. How's the 202?

I got flashed by the one in Tonopah coming into Phoenix. Ironically, on the way back to Los Angeles, there isn't one. Must be targeting the CA drivers.

I just drove back from Scottsdale tonight about an hour ago... in the Lotus of course, and during which time I passed 2 van cameras on the way up on the 101, and on the way back on the 101 again, I passed 8 motorist pulled over by 8 separate highway patrol cars in about a 5 mile stretch! WTF!!!

Yeah, now we're turning into the next nanny-state. Its all about revenue. This Austrailian company makes these things, installs and monitors them for free and basically sends the state a check.

I hate them. Their only purpose is for revenue and it has been shown that it isn't making the roads safer. Often they are making the roads more dangerous because people panic brake when they see the camera.

The Tucson radar van is going to be on Valencia (near the airport) for seven hours on Christmas Eve. I'm sure they have the safety of Christmas travelers in mind and aren't thinking at all about the revenue from increased traffic in that area...

Good site that follows photo radar in Arizona:

so you have a problem with people being pulled over by real cops for speeding also, or just the camera doing the work of people?
I am not a fan of the cameras for speeding( i do like the ones that enforce red light running, that saves lives IMO), but i have no issue whatsoever when a real cop pulls someone over.
its a simple solution, just dont go over the speedlimit, and take out your frustrations at the track.

Yes, people brake heavily from 90, go thru the zone very carefully, then speed up again. Pretty funny.

Been doing alot of research on this! Most of you might already know this! I have found a simple way to protect yourself from photo radar tickets! Register you car to a LLC. Wish I could find the article that talks about this but I found it to be very interesting..

Anyone else read about that?

This is largely a BS answer. In Arizona it isn't completely flat, but in Phoenix its close. The center part of I-10 that goes straight through the City is 55mph. It is 65mph until you are in complete desert. The limits were set artifically low to slow things down. They should raise the limits 10mph now that they have 24/7 enforcement.

Yes, cameras replace cops because someone who will risk death at an intersection is sure to be stopped by a camera.
I hear LA is replacing all cops with security systems and clerks.

It is obvious and well documented that most people tagged at redlights are people doing safe "paper" crimes like being a quarter second through the light.
It is also well known that a proper yellow time eliminates almost all "redlight running".
Our accident rate has skyrocketed here due to panic by the cameras.

I'm sure Operation Showboat will make you feel really good until someone really dangerous blasts through a light and takes you out.
Only cameras, right?

The truly dangerous drivers are only stopped by the presence of police.

Unhappy

I just got my first tic here in Az. today! Was 20 over (I know, bad) but was written up for 15 over (whew). The weird part is the cop chose to give me a tic that wouldn't affect my driving record or insurance. Never even heard of that!

And I couldn't help but notice, when he sent me on my way, there was another cop that had someone else pulled over behind me!

I think I've read that somewhere in my research about AZ ticket. The photo radar tickets on the freeway don't add points to your driving records. I'll try to dig that up later but would make sense if you want people to keep speeding. Pay your fine and go around again.

I just got flashed Wednesday on the 202 at Broadway in Mesa. Mobile photo radar unit. Thing is, I was doing like 60 at the time. I saw the warning signs and checked my speed. Just over 65, so I slowed down a tad, well before the camera was in sight. And it still flashed me. WTF?!! And it's not like I was speeding before I saw the warning signs either. We're talking maybe 68mph. Supposedly, those things aren't even programmed to go off unless you're doing 11 or more over the limit. I'm pretty pissed because I just did traffic school 2 weeks ago!! (I was pulled over by a real cop, and got a legit ticket)

I'd be surprised if you got a ticket, but you never know. I was flashed while doing about 50 in a 40 and no ticket ever showed up. Might have helped that I still have Oregon plates on my car...

When I got flashed, I was doing 83 (on my speedo which should be more like 81 in actual) in a 75mph zone. I heard the 11 mph over was the trigger point too which means I'd have to be doing 86mph.

People drive so erratically in AZ, it's nauseating.

It's like watching the deaf, dumb, and blind carrying on through never never land... no turn signals, no consistent speeds, and heaven forbid you ask someone to keep a safe distance from your rear end - ESPECIALLY the pukes on their cell phones.

Add in the cameras, and you have the beginnings of the police state. I don't plan on getting one as I drive like a bat out of hell from 0-speed limit and then cruise... I just can't afford a ticket and would rather buy new mods for my new Elise.

As for the cops - well, I wouldn't want their job. Can you imagine being so low and untalented that you couldn't find a better job than to pull people over all day long? I've never met a cop that woke up in the morning and said, "Oh BOY!!! I can't WAIT to go pull people over and scoop up dead people off roadways today!! It's going to be a GREAT day!!"

It's a bullsh1t job... full of guys I used to beat up and take lunch money from when I was a kid. funny how karma works.

I recently got a ticket in AZ. Was driving over the limit. The officer gave me a ticket for 'Wasting Resources' which is a $35 ticket that carries no points or insurance hassle, etc. Was driving from Phx to Safford. A ticket for wasting gas... oh well, the fine and hassle sure could have been worse.

What if you decide to fight the ticket?
You have the right to face your accuser.
How do you swear in a camera?
How do you cross examine a camera?

That right has been taken away from you.....just one of many.
This is being done for two reasons.......control and revenue.
