Fun first day at Hallett

Today was the first day of the Hallett HST (High Speed Touring) event.

I had a good time. I was the fastest person in the group which meant that I was often picking my way through traffic. Passing is 'at will' here in any of the passing zones (5 of them in 1.8 miles). At first I was pretty timid passing as I was used to point bys from previous DEs (three or four folks would point by), but by the end of the day I was passing folks in all the straights. In the early part of the day folks were racing my down the straights, but after lunch someone in a Vette mentioned that he "learned a lot when he let the Lotus' pass him by lifting", so folks were a little more courteous.

The very last run of the day was filled with Mini Coopers. They were fun, kind of like a moving chicane...

All in all it was a very good day. Everybody had fun (Except the guy who flipped his '67 Vette race car. While he's O.K., I'm sure he's bummed that his car flipped.) and the open passing was actually pretty safe, although I only got the perspective of a passer as most of the other cars that could have caught me had less experience (ACR Viper and Z06 come to mind) in their cars than I had in mine.

I got a little rubbing from the RA1s, so my left rear wheel liner got progressively smaller as the day went on. Eventually I cut it to avoid future rubbing. The RA1s are very nice! Big difference from A048s.

Nice job, Rich! A little more patience and fortitude going into 1 as well as really hanging it out late into 4 and you could probably shave another 3-4 seconds. I was hoping to make it, but... You guys couldn't have had better weather, too!

Cheers!
Eric
