Club111 San Diego meet & drive, August 20
Saturday, August 20, I would like to invite my fellow EliseTalk drivers on a tour of San Diego's finest 2-lane backroads. Long held secret by our local motorcycle cabals, I'm prepared to face certain punishment in revealing these distinctly nonlinear and less-trafficed ribbons of asphalt, all for your carving pleasure.
Our driving begins in Rancho Bernardo, at West Bernardo Dr and I-15. There is parking aplenty at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Take the Pomerado/W Bernardo freeway exit from 15, head West (south) for about half a mile, and turn into the first parking area on the right. ![]() Please arrive fueled and caffinated, as our plan is to depart at 9:00AM and drive until lunch. Lunch? Oh yes. We will taking our noon luncheon atop Mount Palomar at Mother's Kitchen. Well-known to any two-wheeled San Diegan, this all-vegetarian menu offers excellent omlettes, chili, and deserts. A general store with drinks is next door. ![]() Before lunch, we will take a few moments near Lake Henshaw for a group photo, for those Elise drivers who want to partipate. Route It reads like a Greatest Hits of East County: Bandy Canyon, Old Julian Hwy, Mesa Grande, Palomar grades (both).. Form & Tone This is a drive through the country, enjoying our fine warm weather and natural scenery. In Mazda terms, this would be a "single zoom" drive. Wives and friends, even those as prone to carsickness as my own, are certainly welcomed. Those drivers wishing to practice heel-toe and the perfect apex are quite welcome to meet us for lunch on Palomar, as they will likely be bored with this pace. Faster drivers in front as CHP Bait, Sunday drivers in the rear. If weather holds, there will be plenty of grist for the great A/C debate. A printed route plan will be provided to everyone in the morning, and we will regroup at each turnoff. This is a Club111 event, but nonmembers are welcomed as well. Other Lotus drivers, especially lucious green Esprits, are certainly invited. Non-lotus drivers and the odd Miata can join as well, if they can drive either ahead of or behind the awe-inspiring Elise column. RSVP Mother's Kitchen has offered to reserve their outdoor pinetree seating area for us, but I'd like to call ahead with a vague headcount, so please reply in this thread if you will be joining us. ![]() Last edited by Ground Loop : 08-09-2005 at 04:30 PM. |

Excellent!
Edit to say: Sadly I have to decline. My schedule changed and we have to do some tire testing Sat morning at Qualcomm. We are very short on time so there is no other day for this ![]()

I just thought I'd invite some folks along this time. If you can't make this one, like Vantage said, there will be more. Oh yes, there will be more. ![]() |

1-week countdown bump, for anyone who hasn't seen it.
Weather was nice out today -- warm. I saw a pretty worked up Viper GTS, yellow with black racing stripes, CF wing, and the widest rear rubber I've ever seen. License something like RACE YLW. Sounded sweet, but I think I would drive it straight to jail. |

I'll aim to make it down.
![]() Edit: I am sorry also but I have to change plans as well. I won't be able to make it down this Saturday. For those that do, have a great time! Last edited by clrodrick : 08-18-2005 at 09:35 PM. |

I would love to come and tag along in the back with the Sunday driver guys, but my lowly MR2 is badly in need of a brake job right now.
...and I only get motion sickness as a passenger, when thrown around in a large car driven by a twist meister. (Ask Randy) erp...But on one of these drives, GL... z |

Yo Steve,
Any idea when you will be at Mother's? Ballpark?

I'd guess 11:30, noon at the latest.
I'm making up the route map now, so I'll have a better idea of miles and such. I'll post it in a bit. It sounds like it should be a nice group -- not too big to be unwieldy. Anyone want to volunteer for the lead slot? You get a radio and a map. Some experience with SD roads preferred. I'll bring up the rear. |

I'll see you folks there!
Unfortunately I'll be on 2 wheels... Also, be careful. There should be a lot of CHP... My motorcycle club is doing a ride for the Discovery channel tomorrow [very similar route to yours]. It's a special on street riding and track riding, how good riders can be responsible on the street and tear it up on the track versus the whiz-bang or zoom-splat mentality common on the mount of Palomar... |
