New Track in N.J.

Millville OKs $100 million motorsports park

Associated Press

MILLVILLE, N.J. - A plan to build a $100 million motor sports park in this Cumberland County community got the green light from city planners, a major step for a proposal feared by some for the noise it will generate but cheered by others for the jobs it will create.

Construction is expected to begin in March on the park, which will feature a 4.1-mile racetrack, restaurants, a driving school, a classic car gallery and hotels on a 700-acre site near the Millville Airport. Once completed in spring 2007, the park will employ about 1,500 people in full- and part-time jobs.

"It will be a huge economic and educational benefit to the area," said Barry Taylor, a former president of Wheaton Village glass works, who campaigned for the track.

About 100 people turned out Monday night for the city Planning Board's vote, including several people who live near the proposed site and are concerned about noise from the race cars.

But others eagerly await the opening of the park, including Dave Morris, a race car driver from Ocean City.

"I would like to be able to race nearer to my home," Morris told The Press of Atlantic City"

That's quite a ways down. I was hoping it was closer to NY.

Although that track is a long way from home, it will have a large skidpad that the SJR SCCA club will use for autoxing! The agreement is already in place.

Apparently all the environmental issues (and a lawsuit) are already settled so the race facility looks to be a go.

How large is the autocross zone? We really need some nice big sites here in the NE. Ideally large enuf and nice enuf for a Nat'l Tour event.

the site has been in the works for a while. Apparently it has the zoning, so it may have less issues

and there's some interesting support, too (ARGC)

looks like fun...

Stan, I do not have the dimensions but there will be a large skidpad that supposedly will be perfect for autoxing. Even if it's only twice the size of the current SJR lot it would be a big improvement for the region. And it's supposed to be flat, unlike the Philly region's Ripken, which is so sloped and full of obstacles. So I look forward to seeing what it turns out to be. Unfortunately, it'll be 2007 before it's done.

I can understand why you don't like poles and pot-holes, but flat seems boring to me. Great for tuning, sure, but I love the "elevation changes" we get in WDCR. On the other hand, try beating a Z06 with an uphil charge after a harpin.

Elevation changes make it interesting for sure, but Ripken is a bit over the top with troughs, poles, holes, and indentations. DC sounds fun and I'll be down there to do battle with you next season, Chris. One more thought on Thunderbolt-a new flat lot, if big enough, could allow course designers to emulate a National-style course, which I would become a regular SJR guy for! The polar opposite of what SJR has been for years. I just don't know how big the lot is...
