Thumbs up Battery Relocated

I finally got around to moving the battery to a more *appropriate* location

We all know that we want to move weight closer to the center of the car and preferable to the right (passenger) side of the car to help bring it's weight closer to neutral. So what better hunk of ballast to move than the lead lump of a battery

I modified the battery mount that goes with clamhinge and found a perfect mounting spot next to the alternator. It's very stout sitting on the frame rail. The battery cables were already long enough since I had extended them for the clamhinge as well... Was a pretty quick project and an excellent improvement for the battery location...

Have a good one!

Phil

I visited BOEFabrication.com | Beyond Original Equipment to check out the ClamHinge, but I see it is not yet available. When will it be available and what will it cost?

"When" is a good question. Getting closer to completing the next batch. I'll announce when the cart is open for new orders. My partner in crime is getting married around the first of October so we're moving like a herd of turtles on here lately Hang in there, they're coming

Best,

Phil

That's exactly where I've been thinking of moving my battery. Glad to know it works!

Actually the intercooler is to the left of the AC lines. I think he might be ok.

Phil! What needs to be modified, just the top bracket?

Would love to move my batt there, one less thing to worry about when tilting.

Do you know the cost or is that yet to be determined?

Oh, probably... Could get to it by removing the wheel and liner- like changing the airfilter... As seldom as the battery need serviced, that access is porbably sufficient...

On the otherhand, it's much easy to just flip the lid

Best,

Phil

Nice location Phil. I've had mine behind the passenger seat for a while, same location as yours but on the other side of the firewall. It's cool that the leads are just the right length.

It makes sense. That little nook almost seems made for that battery location It also makes tilting the clam much easier without that extra weight of the battery, so I think you'll appreciate that all by itself

I hadn't really given the price much thought as I'm not sure there's enough demand to make a bunch of them... Anyone with the clam tilt could modify the battery tray that comes with it to do this mod... It does take a little bit of fab work, but no fancy tools... Just a hacksaw/sawzall/portaband to cut two of the ears off tray. Then cut and bend the long end of the tray to conform to the battery's new orientation profile, i.e. the fact that it's now sitting up right so its footprint is smaller. The tray is easily bent in bench vise or with some channel locks. See my original pics for what the final product should look like...

Then drill a hole as shown that will share an existing mounting hole on the frame and add additional support with the adjacent mounting bolt on the frame with a large flat washer overlapping the tray...

Finally, using some 1" strap from Home depot, you can make new hold down straps such as the ones I've got in the pics... Sounds complicated, but there's really only 30 minutes worth of work there...

Best,

Phil

Well if you won't make me my quick hard top release we got to get something out of you. Plus I really don't want to go down and get a vise and the tools for your "30min" job.

Easier for you to ship it to me!

[In my best Dr. Evil Voice] You're working me to the friggin bone here!

I'll see what I can do. Just hang in there a bit... I might be able to work on an exchange basis as soon as my time clears up a bit. It won't be super clean cut if I modify the existing tray (not that you can see it anyway) but would be in similar form that my tray is...So if that's OK....

Best,

Phil
