Need a little help...when attaching a battery tender where would be the best place to attach the negative alligator clip or ring?

to the negative post of the battery? Is this a more subtle question than it appears to be?

I think you're supposed to attach it to the small part....the part that's not lit...

Ill give you the same great advice someone gave me..... Just buy the attachment that allows you to connect it through the power outlet inside the car. You wont even have to touch the battery.

OP,
First time charging, I had the same question, the instruction states to hook it up to a metal part of the engine or frame and in our car, a little difficult. I've hooked it up directly onto the neg. terminal with the rings and have not had any problems.

I assume you're talking about connecting the BT pig-tail so it can be easily plugged in.

Find a bolt that fits the hole (should be threaded as mine is) in the picture below. Attach the negative (black) terminal here, and the positive (red) to the battery positive terminal. This works well because the pigtail can then be fed through the louvers for easy plug-in.

foosh,

How long is your "pigtail" connector? There is no way that my connector would go from the engine bay through the divider between the bay and the boot to get to the battery. It's just not long enough.

Mine is connected directly to the battery terminals, fed out the back of the battery cover and hangs along the front of the cover in the boot. No fires or blowing up so far when I connect it.

Sure it is, just split the red and black sides of the cable by pulling them apart, until you have enough lead. My cable is the std. one that came with the std. $19 BT. However, connecting to the battery is fine in 99.999999% of cases. Attaching to a ground away from the battery is just an added precaution.

Even though it is unlikely you will get a spark from such a low amperage unit it can be completely avoided by only plugging in the maintainer after it has been connected to the battery, just like you would, charging a battery out of the car.

I guess I have a shorter than standard unit

and my cord is too short to do that also
